It’s time to take a look at the most anticipated movies of 2024! Though some of this year’s releases were affected by the writers’ strike last year, which delayed the production and distribution of some films, 2024 still looks like a very promising year for movies! We made a list of the 70+ (74, to be precise) best new movies you should look forward to this year, from future box office hits to hidden gems and streaming releases.
The most anticipated movies of the year are listed by month and in order of release. We prioritized U.S. and global releases, but we added U.K. dates where available. 1. THE BOOK OF CLARENCE (JAN 12, 2024)

The director of The Harder They Fall is back with a new feature from Sony and Legendary. The Book of Clarence, which was supposed to hit theaters in October 2023 and has been postponed to January 2024 according to Screen International, is a biblical story, just like its title suggests. Starring LaKeith Stanfield, Omar Sy, Benedict Cumberbatch, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Anna Diop and James McAvoy, it’s about a Jerusalem man who tries to use the advent of the Messiah for his own gain but ends up learning about faith instead.
2. INSHALLAH A BOY (JAN 12, 2024)

The first Jordanian film to ever premiere in Cannes is finally coming to theaters in 2024, and you don’t want to miss it. There aren’t many films that can portray complex issues without judging any of the characters, and Inshallah A Boy (Inchallah un Fils) does just that. At the same time, it also raises awareness of a situation that will be unfamiliar to many audiences, in the most effective way possible. The film tells the story of a woman in her thirties (Mouna Hawa’s Nawal) who one day wakes up and finds her husband dead. Which, since she lives in Jordan, means that she will have to fight to keep everything she holds dear, from her house to custody of her daughter, since she is now a widow with no sons, and, to quote a character, “this is how things work”, in Jordan. Not to be missed.
3. MEAN GIRLS (JAN 12, 2024)

Tina Fey brings us a new Mean Girls movie, and the hype is high! The plot is similar to the first film’s: a new student named Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the group of popular girls at school, ruled by Regina (Reneé Rapp) and fellow students Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). But Cady falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend (Christopher Briney) and that’s when she suddenly becomes an enemy. And so, Cady sets to take down the “Plastics”‘ queen bee with the help of outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey).
4. THE TIGER’S APPRENTICE (JAN 19, 2024)

In the works since 2022, The Tiger’s Apprentice was initially supposed to come out in 2023, but the release date is currently set to January 19, 2024. The film is about a Chinese American boy, Tom Lee, who discovers that magic runs in his family, and that, like his ancestors before him, he needs to become the protector – or “Guardian” – of the Chinese Zodiac. Evil forces threaten the universe and Tom’s only hope is bringing all the Zodiac animal warriors together as a team, and fight back. The movie stars Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Sandra Oh, Kyle Jarrow, and David Magee, among others.

Argylle follows the adventures of its globe-trotting titular super-spy, played by Cavill. It takes place in the U.S., London and various locations, and it also stars Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Dua Lipa, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Ariana DeBose and Samuel L. Jackson.
6. THE PROMISED LAND (FEB 2, 2024)

The Promised Land (Bastarden) takes place in 18th century Denmark, where Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen, of Another Round) has just returned from the war with very few possessions. But Ludvig is an ambitious man, and he has a plan. He has decided to build a colony in the name of the King on the most uninhabitable land of the kingdom, and he is determined to work the land and get something to grow on it. But the ruthless Frederik De Schinkel, his neighbor, is threatened by Ludvig’s success and sets out to destroy him. A few more characters eventually join our unlikely hero, in a tragedy about ambition and vengeance that keeps us guessing till the end.
7. BOB MARLEY, ONE LOVE (FEB 14, 2024)

Bob Marley: One Love is a celebration of the titular singer, looking at the life and music of the iconic star and how he inspired generations with a message of unity and love. This is the first time we can watch Bob Marley’s story, and it’s coming to the big screen in a movie made with the help of the Marley family, with Kingsley Ben-Adir as the lead and Lashana Lynch as Bob’s wife Rita. Also starring James Norton, Tosin Cole, Anthony Welsh, Michael Gandolfini, Umi Myers, and Nadine Marshall.
8. MADAME WEB (FEB 14, 2024)

Here’s another highly anticipated Sony Release. Madame Web is another Spider-Man spin-off, this time revolving around the titular clairvoyant mutant, played by none other than Dakota Johnson. The movie has been delayed twice but we finally have a global release date: February 14, 2024! Also starring Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.

Dune: Part Two takes us through the rest of Paul Atreides’ journey, as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee. The film was originally supposed to hit theaters in November 2023 but was delayed due to the strikes.
10. IMAGINARY (MAR 8, 2024)

What if your imaginary friend wasn’t just imaginary, and what if he wasn’t a friend? Blumhouse never disappoints, and the minds behind Five Nights at Freddy’s and M3GAN bring us a film with a fantastic premise, called Imaginary. Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, but her youngest stepdaughter, Alice (Pyper Braun), becomes a little too attached to a stuff bear she finds in the basement. And said bear, who goes by Chauncey, becomes increasingly sinister.

Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian and Ed Harris star in Rose Glass’ (Saint Maud) highly anticipated Love Lies Bleeding. It tells the love story between an ambitious bodybuilder and a reclusive gym manager, who are pulled into the latter’s criminal family in this tale of revenge.

The new, highly anticipated Ghostbusters sequel is here! Fans are looking forward to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire because not only does it follow the Spengler on a new adventure, but it all starts at the New York City firehouse! Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut is an action thriller about a man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt, powerful elite who murdered his mother and many other poor and powerless people. It’s inspired by the legend of Hanuman, and Patel plays an anonymous man named Kid, who wears a gorilla mask in an underground fight club and gets beaten by popular fighters for cash. One day, he finally learns how to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s leaders, and he sets forth to get retribution.
18. CIVIL WAR (APR 12, 2024)

Global Release: April 12
Civil War is coming to theaters and IMAX in April, and Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley Henderson are attached to it. From Ex Machina writer-director Alex Garland, the movie takes place in a near-future America, where a race to the White House is happening.
19. ABIGAIL (APR 19, 2024)

In the highly anticipated Abigail, a group of would-be criminals kidnap a 12-year-old ballerina, who’s the daughter of a powerful but dangerous man. Needless to say, they ask for a $50 million ransom, which they’ll collect on the following day. All they have to do now is keep an eye on the girl overnight, in an isolated mansion. But they soon discover that this ballerina is no normal little girl.
20. CHALLENGERS (APR 26, 2024)

Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers was supposed to open the 2023 Venice Film Festival and then be released globally on September 15, but its release was postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes. The film stars Zendaya as a former tennis prodigy named Tashi Duncan. Tashi is now a coach, and a very strict one at that: she “makes no apologies for her game on and off the court”, as the official synopsis reads. The same cannot be said of her husband Art (Mike Faist, of West Side Story (2021)), who’s on a losing streak, and who becomes Tashi’s next project. But when a match against the washed-up Patrick (Josh O’Connor, of The Crown) – who also happens to be Tashi’s ex-boyfriend and Art’s ex-best friend – is on the horizon, everything changes.
21. THE FALL GUY (MAY 3, 2024)

Universal has a new project called The Fall Guy: it’s based on the 1980s TV show of the same name and it’s about a stuntman! Our hero is fresh off an almost career-ending accident, and his new mission is tracking down a missing movie star, all while solving a conspiracy and try to get back with his one true love. This is giving us serious Shaun of the Dead vibes, and it also stars Ryan Gosling in the titular role, alongside Hannah Waddingham, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Emily Blunt. Count us in!
22. KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (MAY 10, 2024)

Caesar’s adventures continue in the fourth film of the latest Planet of the Apes saga, which is set years after the event of the previous movie. It follows Caesar’s reign, where a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire. But there’s also a young ape who starts to question what he’s been told about the past and ultimately changes the future.
23. IF (MAY 17, 2024)

Global Release: May 17
John Krasinski directs If and also stars in it alongside Ryan Reynolds and an all star cast. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Fiona Shaw, Cailey Fleming, Maya Rudolph, and Awkwafina are all attached to this animated fantasy film about a girl who can see the titular “IF”, which stands for Imaginary Friends who were abandoned once their “humans” grew up. It’s Krasinski’s first comedy after the A Quiet Place films, and we couldn’t be more excited.
24. FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA (MAY 24, 2024)

The highly anticipated origin story of Furiosa, Charlize Theron’s legendary character from Mad Max: Fury Road, is here! The film may not give us a completely believable backstory to the young hero (here played by Anya Taylor-Joy), but it definitely manages to recapture that Mad Max insanity fans loved in the last movie. On top of this, the action scenes are breathtaking, Chris Hemsworth is in top form as new character Dementus, and we guarantee you’ll have so much fun with it. Read our review of Furiosa!
25. THE GARFIELD MOVIE (MAY 24, 2024)

Chris Pratt returns as Garfield the cat, and this time, he’s going on an outdoor adventure! The movie follows his reunion with his long-lost father (Samuel L. Jackson) that forever changes Garfield and his friend Odie’s routines. Read our review of The Garfield Movie!
26. BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE (JUNE 7, 2024)

Inside Out 2 is coming, and there’s a new voice in Riley’s head! The voice is that of one of the most relatable human emotions: Anxiety. She’s voiced by Maya Hawke and she has a very important role in this anticipated sequel, which perfectly captures that moment, while growing up, when we realize who we want to be as a person.
28. THE BIKERIDERS (JUNE 21, 2024)

Jeff Nichols’ highly anticipated The Bikeriders was supposed to come out in December 2023, but it was postponed to June 21, 2024 – which is a shame, as it’s a fantastic film. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s 1968 book of the same name where he interviewed members of a biker gang, the movie follows said biker gang in the 1960s. Mike Faist plays Danny Lyon, who interviews members of the group known as the Vandals – mainly, their leader Johnny (Tom Hardy) and the charming Benny (Austin Butler). We meet them and the rest of the gang through the eyes of Kathy (Jodie Comer), in a story that’s reminiscent of the best biker movies but also heartbreaking in many ways. Don’t miss it!
29. A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE (JUNE 28, 2024)

A new A Quiet Place prequel is coming, and Paramount set the release date to June 28! It stars Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Lupita Nyong’o, Djimon Hounsou, and Denis O’Hare. The movie take us back to “the day the world went quiet,” and it’s best if you go in knowing nothing else about it. Needless to say, Lupita Nyong’o is phenomenal. 30. MAXXXINE (JULY 5, 2024)

X and Pearl fans, rejoice: the wait is nearly over. Ti West’s new movie in the franchise, MaXXXine, is coming! Mia Goth is the protagonist and stars alongside Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon.
31. FLY ME TO THE MOON (JULY 12, 2024)

Fly Me to the Moon takes us back to NASA’s Apollo 11 moon landing. Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum play marketing executive Kelly Jones and launch director Cole Davis, who are both under immense stress due to the imminent mission. But things get even more complicated when the White House instructs Jones to stage a fake moon landing, which they would keep as a back-up in case things don’t go according to plan.

An FBI Agent is dealing with an unsolved serial killer case. One day, it all becomes more complicated when evidence comes up that connects the case to the occult. The winner of the SXSW 2024 Festival Favorite Audience award at last year’s TIFF is coming to theaters! This festival favorite is about a theater program at a notorious Correctional Facility in New York. Colman Domingo plays real-life prisoner “Divine G,” who finds escape from a life of imprisonment by putting on a play with his fellow inmates. The movie is based on a real-life rehabilitation program, and many formerly incarcerated actors took part in its making, including Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, Sean San José, and Paul Raci.
34. TOUCH (JULY 12, 2024)

In Touch, the director of Everest brings us another story of a journey. This time, it’s that of a widower looking for his first love, who disappears 50 years before the events in the movie. It’s based on a novel and it spans years and continents.
35. TWISTERS (JULY 19, 2024)

Universal is releasing a sequel to Twister (1996), and the director of Minari is attached to it. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kate Carter, a former storm chaser who was traumatized by a tornado when she was in high school. Now, she has made storms her career, and she works to keep New York City safe. One day, her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) asks for her help to test new tracking system in a rural area, where she meets Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), a man who has become a social media sensation by posting about his reckless adventures chasing storms. Needless to say, the past repeats itself, and our heroes will have to join forces. Other sast members include Sasha Lane and Daryl McCormack.
36. DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (JULY 26, 2024)

Remember that hilarious Deadpool update shared by Ryan Reynolds last year? The time has finally come for us to see Deadpool & Wolvering, where he stars alongside Hugh Jackman. Jackman’s return to the franchise is a surprise after Logan, which was supposed to be his last movie, and we don’t wait to find out more.

Warner will release M. Night Shyamalan’s new film, starring newcomer Rolando Davila-Beltran. The director describes it as an “unusual thriller,” where a father and his teen daughter attend a pop concert and realize that something sinister is taking place. Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills and Allison Pill are in the cast.
40. BORDERLANDS (AUG 9, 2024)

A fantastic cast makes up the ensemble of Borderlands, Eli Roth’s newest, highly anticipated movie. Cate Blanchett plays Lilith, a bounty hunter with many secrets who returns to her home planet of Pandora on a mission to find a powerful man’s (Edgar Ramírez) missing daughter. To do so, she ends up allying with a team of misfits, consisting of a mercenary (Kevin Hart), a scientist (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her demolitionist protegé (Ariana Greenblatt), and a robot (Jack Black). Their common enemy? Aliens. Their ultimate mission? Saving the universe. This videogame adaptation is one of the most promising movies of the summer.

A 17-year-old girl named Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), her estranged father Luis (Marton Csokas), his new wife Beth (Jessica Henwick), and their mute 8-year-old daughter Alma (Mila Lieu) move to a resort in the German Alps. Upon their arrival, they are greeted by the friendly owner, Mr. König (Dan Stevens): Luis is going to design a new set of buildings for him, and they both start reminiscing since Luis and Beth spent their honeymoon at the resort. But things soon take a turn for the weird when disturbing things start to happen to the resort’s guests, including Alma, and Gretchen seems to be the only one to notice it. It’s up to her to figure out what’s going on, and possibly save her family.

Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie play tech billionaire named Slater King and cocktail waitress Frida. One day, the two of them meet at a fundraising gala and they instantly connect. He invites her on a dream vacation on his private island, but the idyllic holiday soon begins to change when strange things start to occur. Frida thinks she’s going crazy: is what she’s seeing real? Is there something wrong with the island? Soon, she realizes she’s going to have to find out right away if she wants to make it out alive. Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis star in The Thicket, a thriller-western hybrid that promises to deliver the best of both worlds, with an edge-of-your-seat story that’s set in the West. Not only was the cut screened at the festival so confused that it was hard to even get a sense of its plot, but it experimented with the medium in a way that would not be possible to replicate in normal theaters. To everyone’s surprise, the film is getting a theatrical release, but the version that will be screened to audiences will be significantly different from the Cannes one. Heretic is giving us Saw vibes in the best possible way.

Ridley Scott’s next project after Napoleon is the anticipated sequel to Gladiator, starring Paul Mescal as Lucius and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla. In the sequel, we follow Lucius, whose uncle killed Maximum in the first movie. Tyrannical Emperors force him to fight in the Colosseum, where he will try to save Rome.
