(L to R) Julia-Louis Dreyfus as the voice of Lily, the sheep, and Hugh Jackman as George Hardy in THE SHEEP DETECTIVES, from Amazon MGM Studios.

With a good mystery and a very strong cast, The Sheep Detectives is a delightful take on the whodunit genre.

Director: Kyle Balda
Genre: Whodunnit, Action, Comedy, Mystery
Run Time: 109′
Release Date: May 8, 2026
Where to Watch: In U.K. & Irish cinemas, in U.S. theaters, and globally in theatres

George Hardy (Hugh Jackman, of Logan) reads a detective story to his beloved sheep every night, not expecting in the slightest that they can not only understand him but also look forward to this moment every day. But when George dies unexpectedly, the flock cannot help but be suspicious about the mysterious circumstances of his death, or rather, murder.

Led by Lily (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, of Thunderbolts*), who George called the smartest sheep in the flock, the sheep are determined to discover who killed their shepherd, but how far will they be willing to go in order to do so?

The very premise of the film is fascinating, with sheep that not only understand humans but also actively get involved in their lives. This brings an element of novelty to the tried and tested whodunit genre, keeping it fresh and interesting for the audience. The Sheep Detectives also tread the line between portraying the sheep as animals and giving them human qualities very well. On the one hand, the sheep may talk and think like humans, but on the other, they still look like sheep and ultimately have a very different worldview and understanding of life compared to humans.

The brilliant ensemble cast makes the flock even more interesting. The sheep not only look different but also sound different, and each has their own personality, as explained by George at the beginning. The voice actors are to thank for that as their performance creates the complex and layered characters that make up the flock. Equally, the human cast is just as strong and pivotal to the film’s success. Moreover, the detective element in The Sheep Detective is also well constructed, keeping with the tight and exciting pacing of whodunit movies and with twists and turns the audience will not see coming.

The Sheep Detectives Trailer (Amazon MGM Studios)

The Sheep Detectives is more than just a comedy or whodunit movie. At its heart, the film conveys an emotional message about grief and what it means to lose and remember someone we love. At the same time, it also portrays a beautiful message of acceptance, reminding everyone in the audience that just because someone looks different, it doesn’t mean that they cannot be part of a group or be loved just as much as everyone else. These elements add an emotional level to the film and make it better suited for a general audience rather than just children.

However, it is still in many ways a kids’ film. The humour is primarily aimed at children and won’t have the adults in the room laugh quite as much at the moments that are meant to be funny. The comedy aspect is not as strong, except for a few honourable mentions, no matter how hard The Sheep Detectives tries to make its jokes land. The film is also not particularly memorable in terms of filmmaking. Its shots, editing, and technical elements are very traditional and not at all innovative. Similarly, the movie also follows the tried and tested conventions of its genre, without making any risky or unexpected decisions.

Overall, The Sheep Detectives delivers a powerful message about acceptance and grief that anyone in the audience will be moved by, children or not. Its biggest strength is the way it can speak to different types of audiences, making it truly a movie that can be loved by anyone. It may not be the most original or groundbreaking film of the year, but it is funny, emotional, and entertaining for both children and their parents.
