Apple TV’s Emmy Award-winning series Ted Lasso returns with a new season that was never supposed to happen. The global smash hit originally concluded its three-season run on May 31, 2023, with the super-positive, pun-loving coach returning home to the States to be with his son.
While all of the show’s characters were set up for a pretty happy ending, it clearly wasn’t enough for showrunner and co-creator Jason Sudeikis, who reportedly started having second thoughts about the show’s conclusion in early 2024. Now, here we are, nearly 18 months later, on the verge of Ted Lasso’s long-awaited, once-inconceivable fourth season.
Ahead of its premiere, here’s a look at what you should know about Ted Lasso season 4.
What is Ted Lasso season 4 about?
Ted Lasso season 4 will find the beloved mustache-sporting coach returning to the soccer field, but not to coach a men’s league team. Instead, Coach Lasso will take on his biggest challenge yet in coaching AFC Richmond’s second-division women’s football team, the Lady Greyhounds. Despite the numerous obstacles preventing them from achieving success, the ragtag team of female athletes embody a ton of spirit.
We can also tell you that Richmond club owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) will have a love interest. When asked for details during a recent appearance on The View, the actress remained pretty tight-lipped, mentioning only that her interest is “not unattractive.”
If you watched the show’s first three seasons and think back to the original series finale, the idea of a women’s soccer team as AFC Richmond’s new focus was explicitly teased in a flash-forward ending sequence. In season 3, episode 12, titled So Long, Farewell, Keeley (Juno Temple) pitches a woman’s squad to Rebecca, who reacts with as much enthusiasm as Keeley does to the proposition but with details on how, where, and who would be involved left up for debate.
What the trailer tells us
The official trailer for Ted Lasso season 4 gives us a peek at some of the real-world challenges the Lady Greyhounds face. In addition to having remarkably worse facilities than their male counterparts, they also face less media coverage and much less opportunity for sponsorship.
Over the course of the new season’s 10-episode run, blind faith will be the name of the game, as everyone will have to get comfortable walking before crawling, then taking chances they never imagined they would.
We also see Ted’s ex-wife and son in the stands, so this means the show has found a way to keep the Lasso family together. You may also notice that Henry looks different, and this is because his role has been recast. Expect Henry to play a much bigger role this season, too.
Who’s in the cast of Ted Lasso season 4?
Because of the new season’s narrative pivot, it’s no surprise that most of the show’s former cast, like recurring team members Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernández), Sam Ibisanya (Toheeb Jimoh), and Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) will not be returning. However, several fan favorites are.
In addition to Sudeikis reprising his titular role, Waddingham is returning as Rebecca, Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard, Juno Temple as Keeley Jones, Bret Goldstein as Roy Kent, and Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins.
Numerous fresh faces are also in store. Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education) will star as the Lady Greyhounds’ hard-shelled but dedicated co-coach Alice Chilton, Abbie Hern (My Lady Jane) as determined and ambitious striker Gemma, Jude Mack (Such Brave Girls) as wild-card goalie Boots, Faye Marsay (Game of Thrones) as foul-mouthed center back Lizzie, with Rex Hayes (The Pact) and Aisling Sharkey (Jurassic World: Dominion) as competitive defender twins Siobhan and Niamh, respectively.
Other teammates include Mercedes Assad (Good Grief) as Margy, Shannon Hayes (Vigil) as Shannon, and Annelise Heywood in her debut role as Mady. Additionally, Grant Feely (Obi-Wan Kenobi) joins the cast as Ted’s son, Henry.
When does Ted Lasso season 4 premiere?
Ted Lasso season 4 returns to Apple TV on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Viewers can expect a one-episode premiere, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday through October 7.
Sudeikis confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he has a three-season arc in mind for the series’ continuation and is hopeful there will still be an audience to receive it. Reflecting on his decision to return to the famous feel-good comedy, he said, “I know I needed this. I needed it as much as other people do.”
