2024 VENICE FILM FESTIVAL: THE JURIES & HOST
Let’s start from the Juries! The Venice Film Festival has different juries, whose members are usually all present at the Mostra del Cinema, as they will be watching the movies too. A new host – the “madrina” – is also chosen every year to host the opening and closing night ceremonies. Let’s find out all the names below!
VENEZIA 81 JURY
The Venezia 81 Jury is the jury that votes on the competition titles. They will award the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Special Jury Prize, the Silver Lions for Best Director and Grand Jury Prize, Volpi Cups for Best Actor and Actress, and the “Marcello Mastroianni” Award for best emerging actor or actress, and the Special Lion. - Abderrahmane Sissako – Director, screenwriter and producer (Waiting for Happiness, Bamoko)
- Giuseppe Tornatore – Director and screenwriter (Cinema Paradiso, Ennio)
- Julia von Heinz – Director and screenwriter (Nothing Else Matters, Treasure)
- Zhang Ziyi – Actress (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha)
ORIZZONTI JURY
The Orizzonti strand is a parallel section to Venezia 81, and it’s also a competition. The main award for this strand is the Orizzonti Award for Best Film, but the Jury will give out other prizes too. They are the Orizzonti Awards for Best Director, Best Actor and Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Short Film, and the Special Orizzonti Jury Prize.

OPERA PRIMA ‘LUIGI DE LAURENTIIS’ AWARD JURY
The “Luigi De Laurentiis” Award is also called “Venice Award for a Debut Film” or “Lion of the Future”. It’s the award given to a feature-length debut, chosen from any of the other strands. The prize is 100,000 USD.

VENICE IMMERSIVE JURY
Venice Immersive is one of the most exciting strand of the Venice Film Festival. It showcases a selection of VR, XR, and Extended Reality projects on the Lazzaretto Island. The Jury will award the Venice Immersive Grand Prize, Special Jury Prize, and Achievement Prize.

GIORNATE DEGLI AUTORI JURY
The Giornate degli Autori is one of the most important independent side strands at the festival. They award the GdA Director’s Award Jury, which comes with a EUR 20,000 prize that must be used to promote the film. The other prize is the Europa Cinemas Label, given to European productions or co-productions.
