Practical Magic 2 (2026) Movie Review

Practical Magic 2 is a spellbinding sequel on love, spells, midnight margaritas, and everything in between.

As the too well known family curse still haunts both the younger and newer generation, the potential to break it once and for all finally comes to light, along with a new threat for the Owens family.

The magic is very well portrayed on screen: both visually striking as something otherworldly and well integrated within the aesthetic of the film, it is alsoshown to be something to be careful of and an extraordinary skill. However, I do wish there had been more magic in the movie, especially for a story that is so reliant on witchcraft and spells. Other than to solve major plot points, the use of magic is scarce and not especially visually interesting and this inevitably feels like a missed opportunity for a movie that could have included much more everyday magic in its ordinary scenes. 

As it goes on, it becomes abundantly clear that Practical Magic 2 is as much about sisterhood as it is about magic. While the romantic relationships are present in this movie and at times become touching and beautiful to watch, the real focus of the film is the strong bond between the sisters and amongst the entire Owens family at large. When so many stories still have the characterization of women exclusively reliant on their romantic relationship, this feels like a breath of fresh air with such a key focus on the relationship between women of different generations. Unfortunately, Antonia is severely underused in this film and largely stays away from the main plotline, making the bond between the younger generation of Owens women feel weaker and less developed at times. 

The film is also successful at combining comedy with more emotional moments; it will make you laugh out loud and cry multiple times within the same two hours. While the comedic elements do at times feel out of place in such a high-stakes environment, they are necessary to keep the audience entertained, integrated well within the overall plot of the movie, and perhaps more importantly genuinely funny. Fans of the first film will be glad to hear that Practical Magic 2 also seamlessly integrates some clever callbacks to the original movie in its costumes, set design, scenes, and even in its soundtrack. 

Except for an unnecessary expository voiceover to recap the events of the first film, Practical Magic 2 keeps the pace tight and builds the tension really well in some key moments. While some minor side plot lines could have been entirely cut from the film, it is overall well structured, with a circular ending that is bound to bring everybody to tears. As regards the more emotional moments, there would have been space in the movie to touch more on the topic of grief, which is mentioned throughout but never fully explored. 

Overall, Practical Magic 2 is a spellbinding sequel that reminds us of what magic looks like in everyday life, both for the Owens sisters and for the audience themselves. As a sequel, it works really well and it will be received well amongst fans of the first one. It also works really well to introduce a new generation of witches to the Practical Magic saga and teach them to “always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.”
