Do we really need more zombie films? Colony (Gun-Che) answers that loud and proud with: yes! This time, though, there’s somewhat of a twist. The zombifying drug is injected on purpose into the CEO of a high-stakes science company Chains Bio at a biotech lecture by Seo Young-cheol (Koo Kyo-hwan, of Peninsula), a man holding a grudge over his old colleague. The catch is, Young-cheol has injected himself with the only antidote, and has developed a strain of zombification that means he is the ringleader of anyone who is infected.
Once contaminated, it’s only a matter of time before the first victim is locked into full zombie mode on all fours, ready for a bite at his first casualty. There’s plenty of choice as he’s trapped inside the Doongwoori building, a skyscraper full of offices and shops, and as bodies begin to pile up, it seems like no one on the outside is coming to help them. The rest of the world watches in, demanding at least one team of rescuers go in to save the lives of those trapped.
Kwon Se-jeong (Gianna Jun), a professor of biotech in Seoul, attends this particular conference because her overly protective ex-husband wants her there. Han Kyu-seong (Go Soo, of Hope) wants to introduce his ex-wife to the CEO of Chains Bio so that she can work her way up the ranks and not continue to stay at a mediocre level. Kyu-seong is in a new, serious relationship but always finds his way back to Se-jeong as he wants to care for her. Se-jeong finds it hard to make friends, even if she won’t admit it. This conference was also his way of saying goodbye and leaving knowing she will be okay, as in the morning, he’s moving to the US for good.
For the most part, Colony is intoxicating. It launches at 100mph and tries to keep momentum, sometimes failing, but mostly staying around the 80mph mark instead of the highs it reaches in the first 20 minutes. The zombie effects are cool enough, with some of it feeling a little bit gimmicky, but there are certain scenes where it does feel a little scary. It’s more the amount of bloodshed that makes it horrifying at certain moments, and the way the zombies crack their backs into place.
Gianna Jun is the star of the show, and her return to cinema is a tour-de-force. There’s never a second where she’s not giving her best. Some actors are destined to be horror final girls, and she is one of them. An undeniable chemistry between her character and Kyu-seong blooms; the two of them claim to be over each other, especially with Kyu-seong moving far away, but there’s something still in the air. Maybe they are not meant to be – Kyu-seong loves his new life with his wife and child – but in another life, would they still be together?
Whilst having a slightly new spin on the zombie sub-genre of film, Colony is still predictable once the ball is rolling. If the formula works, though, why change it? We all love watching the gore of it all, wondering who is getting infected next. Is it the runt of the pack, who is flailing behind the rest, or do they hint at killing off the main character to add more suspense? Either way, it’s an entertaining two hours that is perfect for any horror movie night.
