Everything We Know About Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) in Marvel Studios' CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD

Sam Wilson will face Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World. To get you excited for the film, here’s everything we know about the new Captain America movie!

Three years have passed since Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) struggled to take up the mantle of Captain America in the Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but he finally gets the feature-length spotlight in the forthcoming Captain America: Brave New World. The first movie featuring Wilson since Avengers: Endgame seems like a promising story in the MCU, and an opportunity for Marvel to meet their recent history of low-performing superhero movies with a classic character facing new challenges.

The film sets out to prove that the titular hero is not merely a man with a vibranium shield, but a symbol of freedom—an ideal worth believing in. Sam Wilson has long deserved more expansion as a character in the MCU. Here’s everything we know about Captain America: Brave New World!

Everything we know about the plot to Captain America: Brave New World

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier found Wilson finally learning he could blend the best parts of Captain America with his own beliefs and strengths; the final episode revolved around an impassioned speech about the state of politics and the nation’s deep-seated racial inequalities. Wilson grew immensely in the first (and only) season of the show, and Captain America: Brave New World will follow him as he interacts more closely with the government to protect the nation’s safety. Such themes from the Disney+ series will undoubtedly be addressed in more depth on the big screen.

Two main plot points will be explored: President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross’s (Harrison Ford) initiative to make Captain America an official military position while establishing a new Avengers team, and Wilson’s investigation of an international political conspiracy. Wilson will have to decide if he wants to play the game of politics; he will discover the ulterior motives of allies, and who he can truly trust.

Through footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel revealed that Ross will turn into Red Hulk and be the movie’s primary villain, though The Leader (Tim Blake Nelson) and Sidewinder (Giancarlo Esposito) will bring even more conflict against the new Captain America. This will likely serve as further setup for future phases of the MCU, which will crescendo with Thunderbolts and new Avengers movies. Marvel also announced that adamantium will be introduced into the MCU in this film, which has ties to the biological makeup of Celestials and one of the latest additions to the MCU, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine).

Who is in the new Captain America movie? The cast and characters of Brave New World

Alongside Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, Danny Ramirez will reprise his role from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as Joaquin Torres, the new Falcon. Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) plays Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society. Tim Blake Nelson (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) plays Dr. Samuel Sterns, who turns into The Leader, an infamous antagonist in the Hulk comics. Carl Lumbly (Doctor Sleep) plays Isaiah Bradley who was the first Black Captain America in the Truth: Red, White and Black comic series.

Yes, the first trailer came out on July 12, 2024. It features a conversation between Ross and Wilson about the potential of Captain America’s military involvement. Fight scenes are balanced with political imagery and the supposed threat of nuclear war. The last shot of the trailer hints at the film’s villain, Red Hulk. You can watch the trailer here:

Why should we look forward to Captain America: Brave New World?

Marvel has had its ups and downs over the past few years. What started as a promising new era of the MCU with shows like WandaVision and Loki has since fizzled out with box-office flops like Madame Web. It’s no secret that the MCU needs some revitalization, and Captain America: Brave New World could be the perfect way to deliver it. It features a familiar rivalry between Captain America and Thaddeus Ross and spotlights one of the MCU’s most promising veteran characters in Sam Wilson. But it also continues to pave the way forward, promising the introduction of the Serpent Society, adamantium, Red Hulk, and more into the MCU. If there was ever a time to get excited about Marvel again, it’s now.

Captain America: Brave New World will be released globally in theaters on February 14, 2025.
