Born on January 16, 1948 in Carthage, New York (US), John Carpenter is an American director, composer, screenwriter, actor and producer. He is mainly known for the influence he had on the horror genre, and his most acclaimed works include Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980), Escape From New York (1981), The Thing (1982), and Starman (1984). Some of his lesser known movies also came to be considered cult classics years after the release – for example, Big Trouble in Little China (1986), Prince of Darkness (1987), and Escape from L.A. (1996). Carpenter based Halloween’s main character, Michael Myers, on a teenager he once saw saw at a mental hospital on a school trip. Though the filmmaker only wrote, directed and scored the first film in the franchise, he also composed and executive produced most of the other movies, including the recent Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021), and Halloween Ends (2022).
John Carpenter’s first movie as a director, which he made after a series of short films, was 1974’s Dark Star, while his latest was The Ward (2010). Since then, he has directed on many music videos and, most recently, mini series John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (2023).
