Mickey 17 is finally going to be released in a few months: it may not be much – yet – but this is everything we know about the film. Anyone who has been paying attention to the new releases calendar in the past few months would be familiar with the title of this movie. This is not only because the movie is the most anticipated science fiction new release of the upcoming year, but also because the film was actually originally scheduled for almost a year prior to its now new release date. Bong Joon-ho: The Director of Mickey 17
The film is directed by Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho. That is perhaps one of the main reasons behind the hype that is already surrounding the upcoming release of Mickey 17. As it will undoubtedly be the case with this new movie, Bong’s style is characterised by his use of dark comedy, mixing different genres, and focusing on themes of social inequality and critique to the class system with a clear visual style that makes his films always recognisable to the viewers. This will also be the director’s first movie after the his historic win at the Academy Awards in 2020 with Parasite (2019), which triumphed as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best International Feature.
While this marks Bong’s first collaboration with Warner Bros. as a distribution company for Mickey 17, this is not the first time the Korean director works on an English-language project. For audiences who only became familiar with his work during the 2020 award season, this may come as a surprise, but Bong has previously made two English-language films, Snowpiercer in 2013 and Okja in 2017. Both of them are science fiction films, proving that the director is no stranger to such a complex and often misused genre. All of this can’t help but make fans of the director’s work extremely hopeful and excited about his latest feature.
The Cast of Mickey 17: Who Stars in the Movie?
Compared to the director’s previous features, where he would tend to work with the same stars in multiple projects over the years, Mickey 17 marks Bong’s collaboration with actors he has never worked with before. In particular, Robert Pattinson will star in the movie in the lead role, as Mickey Barnes, as he was also the first cast member to be announced in May 2022. Soon after, it was confirmed that other actors would also join the production: Naomi Ackie as Nasha Adjaya, Toni Colette as Gwen Johansen, and Mark Ruffalo and Hieronymous Marshall. Later on in July 2022, Steven Yeun was also announced to be part of this project as Berto.
Everything we know about the Plot of Mickey 17
Based on the novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, Mickey 17 is described as both a science fiction and black comedy film, in pure Bong Joon-ho’s style. The movie will follow Mickey Barnes, who is desperate to get out of Earth and, therefore, signs himself up to be an expendable. As the name might suggest, the latter refers to disposable employees who will regenerate while maintaining most of their memories after dying following one iteration, which means Mickey will be used for any dangerous mission his team goes on. Unexpectedly, Mickey 17 survives a dangerous expedition to colonise Niflhem, an ice planet. This will lead him to go face the newest iteration of himself: Mickey 18.
Mickey 17’s release date: When does the movie come out?
Originally, Mickey 17 was scheduled for release in March 2024. The SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023 made the film be taken off the upcoming schedule and only received a new release day in February 2024, a month before it was supposed to come out, confirming its official release in January 2025 in the United States. The movie will come out three days before, on January 28, in South Korea, compared to the United States where it is slated for January 31, 2024. The change in release schedule was also impacted by delays in post-production that some have attributed to disagreements between the director and Warner Bros, although nothing has been confirmed in that matter.
We may not know very much about Mickey 17 but it is still enough to make audiences excited, both in terms of viewers who are particularly fascinated by the science-fiction genre, as the scope of this one promises to be massive, and of fans of the director, who is finally coming back to the big screen after his latest success in 2019.
