Bridgerton Season 4: Who Will Be the Protagonist?

Francesca, Benedict, and Eloise, three characters of Bridgerton who might be the protagonists of season 4

Who will be the protagonist of Season 4 of Bridgerton? Here are our predictions on the future of the series and everything you need to know about it!

UPDATE: Benedict Bridgerton will be the protagonist of Bridgerton Season 4! Read our article on what to expect from Season 4!

Bridgerton season 4 is a long time coming, as fans of the show can probably guess, but now that the latest season is over, it is all that this author has been able to think about. We know very little of the newest season so far, but everyone is already wondering who the protagonist of season 4 will be. Although nothing has been announced on that front yet, this has not stopped many of us from making our own theories on the possible plotlines in the future of the Netflix show. Realistically, there are only three possible choices: Eloise, Francesca, or Benedict Bridgerton. But which one will it be?

Eloise’s Potential Plot in Bridgerton Season 4

Eloise has had a significant role so far in Bridgerton: she is not only a Bridgerton – and, therefore, involved in the family plots we have seen in season three – but she is also Penelope’s best friend and one of the first people who found out about Lady Whistledown. With the prospect of more travel, as she joins her sister in Scotland, Eloise’s plot seems to take an unexpected turn for season 4. But is there any prospect of her meeting her love interest in the newest season? Fans of the book will know that he may be closer than Eloise herself thinks.

Will Francesca Get Her Happy Ending in Bridgerton Season 4?

Some people may think that Francesca has already found her happily ever after. However, if you have read the book telling Francesca’s story, “When He Was Wicked”, you would know that her story continues after her marriage with John. We have seen the beginning of that love story, but Bridgerton has already teased a key element in Francesca’s future at the end of season 3 when she meets John’s cousin, Michaela (Masali Baduza). This has not gone unnoticed by fans who know and love the character from the book already: except that in the original, the character was Michael Stirling.  The genderbending of this character, and the promise of the introduction of a queer love story, is particularly exciting when we look at Francesca’s future.

Or Will It Finally Be Benedict’s Turn In Bridgerton’s Season 4?

As fans of the books will know, Benedict’s turn was already skipped. In fact, according to the book order, Benedict’s story was supposed to be the third one after Anthony’s. Instead, Bridgerton decided to portray Colin’s love story before his brother. But this season seems to have planted the seeds for Benedict’s plotline: at the end of season 3, Benedict is lost – maybe more than ever – and determined to avoid eligible ladies at his mother’s masquerade ball. And isn’t that the perfect place to begin a love story? That is what defined a lot of the male protagonists in the past. One of the final shots can also point to this theory: as Lady Whistledown talks about the future, the camera frames Benedict in his mother’s home.

Will Colin and Penelope Be in Bridgerton Season 4?

We can definitely expect some familiar faces to come back in the latest season of the show. Some concerns are, of course, to be expected: after all, we have not seen either Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) or Simon (Regé-Jean Page), the protagonists of season 1, in the latest Bridgerton season. However, both the actors who play Colin and Penelope have expressed their interest in coming back for the show in season 4. While they may not be the main characters anymore, we can expect to see the couple enjoying their marriage and respective careers as the main plot of season 4 goes forward.

When Will Bridgerton Season 4 Come Out?

While nothing is set in stone yet, we cannot expect to travel back to Regency Era London for another two years. After all, Season 4 has just started filming earlier this month. Looking at the previous timeline of Season 3, audiences had to wait two years between the end of Season two and the premiere of the latest episodes. While times could surely be shortened now that the production might not be as impacted by the COVID pandemic, the interval between the two seasons is going to be very long indeed.

Although we may have a long wait ahead of us, I am sure that Bridgerton will create a compelling story that captures everyone’s hearts once season 4 eventually comes out. But one thing is for sure: Bridgerton fans can’t wait to know who will be the protagonist of the newest season. Will we have an answer soon? We can only hope. If this author had to make a wild guess, Benedict’s name would come to mind. It does feel like it is about time to tell his story in the upcoming season, but only time will tell.

Season 4 of Bridgerton will be released on Netflix at some point in the future. The release date is TBA, but keep checking this page for updates! Read our review of Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1 and Part 2 and Netflix’s The Decameron!
