Suicide Squad Isekai episode 10 picks up exactly where things previously left off, with: fighting, reanimated skeletons, magic, and a baddie called the Undead King (Yakuri Tamura). It also then turns out that the Enchantress (Shizuka Itou) we’ve so far seen is a sort of projection, her actual body having been imprisoned by the Undead King, and her currently less-than-corporeal form being used as a tool for evil this entire time.
Clayface (Jun Fukuyama) and Rick Flag (Taku Yashiro) free Enchantress’ body, and then do all they can to get it to her other self, which feels every bump and scrape as it fights Harley Quinn (Anna Nagase), the two blokes dragging it along as they are, accompanied by the sounds of a clanging anvil, and a sliding whistle too. Which, I’ll admit, got a laugh out of me. It’s been six episodes since it last did, but I’m happy myself and the show are going out on at least a chuckle.
Cecil (Jun Fukushima) then snags himself an injury whilst battling the aforementioned reanimated skeletons, and Deadshot (Reigo Yamaguchi) picks him clean of that magical armour he’s been wearing. Elsewhere, Enchantress is reunited with her body, which means she somehow regains whatever volition the Undead King had somehow stripped from her, and she fancies some revenge. Before that can happen though, the Undead King (who, like in the previous episode, simply vanishes whenever a character turns their head to face somebody else) has her magical skull staff eat one of her arms, which somehow gives her the power to raise a distracting amount of further undead abominations.
Deadshot then appears with his loot, and shares it out amongst the squad. I’m not sure how it works, but donning a piece of the armour each, the squaddies get a suiting-up sequence, one at a time, in which they all suddenly get new outfits, and Harley gets a pair of hyenas too. This change also results in them all now being able to fly, and do colourful superpower stuff. I suppose the explanation is simply, as it often has been in Suicide Squad Isekai: “magic”.
Which really, aside from featuring creatures like dragons and beastmen, has been the main utilisation of this isekai setting. With the answer to “what’s going on?”, or, “how is that happening?”, or “why is that happening?”, regularly just being… “magic”.
So it’s mostly the usual fighting stuff again in Suicide Squad Isekai episode 10, only now it’s nearing the end, so things are more hectic, and extravagant, and hard to follow, with the landscapes being emptier to compensate, and established backgrounds occasionally disappearing altogether. Oh, and it mostly takes place in the sky, because… “magic”.
Princess Fione (Reina Ueda) then kills the Undead King with… “magic”, and things wrap up pretty quickly after that. The closing music begins to play with about four minutes left, and that time is then dedicated to a reveal that could lead to more episodes – but only if the numbers have been high enough, I’m sure.
Am I enthused at all by the prospect of ten more episodes, though? No, not really. It’s hard to deny that gathering up a bunch of villains and sending them on a suicide mission is a great concept, and I’m glad that ‘isekai’ can be scratched from what is, no doubt, a very long list of ideas on what to do with said concept. But the mystery established early on in Suicide Squad Isekai, for me, began at its most satisfying, and the tone established early on too, for me, started at its most humorous.
I’m hopeful that I’ll one day experience that Suicide Squad story I fall passionately in love with, but if you’re already infatuated with these characters, simply adore yourself a lot of animated fight sequences, and are perhaps more positive in your day-to-day than I am, this one might be for you, more than it has been for me.
Episode 10 of Suicide Squad Isekai is now available to watch on Max and Hulu.
