Everything We Know About Pirates of the Caribbean 6

Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Margot Robbie, three actors who might star in Pirates of the Caribbean 6

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is still in the works at Disney: here is everything we know about the new Jack Sparrow movie!

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may very well be one of the most universally beloved movie series across the years. Based on the attraction of the same name in various Disney theme parks, the first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, came out in 2003. After its widespread commercial and critical success, this was soon followed by two sequels: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and At World’s End (2007). While the narrative arc may have been concluded by the original trilogy, the Pirates of the Caribbean universe was then followed by two standalone sequels, On Stranger Tides (2011) and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). The series has included five films so far, but is there space for a sixth one? This is everything we know about Pirates of the Caribbean 6, the possible upcoming film in the beloved series.

Is Pirates of the Caribbean 6 going to be a reboot or a sequel?

So far, all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies after the first one have been sequels. However, that is not necessarily going to be the direction in which the newest installment of the franchise will go. In fact, producer Jerry Bruckheimer suggested that the upcoming film may be a reboot instead. While this may not seem like a great idea – after all, Jack Sparrow is the beating heart of the franchise – it seems to be a necessary choice in order to get the movie made. According to Bruckheimer, this decision came down to scheduling reasons, as big franchise sequels often struggle to get certain actors they need for the projects to reprise their roles within the timeline necessary for the film.

Is Pirates of the Caribbean 6 going to happen?

The fifth film came out in May 2017 and it was one of the least successful movies of the entire franchise, judging by box office numbers and critical reception. By now, it is easy to imagine that many Pirates of the Caribbean fans may have given up on ever seeing another movie in the series. Time may help the franchise grow hype around the newest film, but when fans have been waiting for so long, this is not necessarily the case. However, Bruckheimer has confirmed on multiple occasions that the upcoming project is going ahead with Craiz Marzin and Ted Elliot, who wrote the first four Pirates films as well, attached to write the screenplay.

Will Johnny Depp be in Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

After the original trilogy, the main cast changed significantly with the following films. The fourth movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and, only a few years later, Dead Men Tell No Tales both introduced new characters and settings to their loyal fans. However, one element that always remained consistent across the entire series was Jack Sparrow, who has always been the main character in every film. If the sixth movie ends up actually being a reboot, then Johnny Depp will not be reprising his iconic role. However, there is still hope: Depp himself has spoken about being open to return to the series and Bruckheimer did approach him to discuss the matter.

What Could Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Be About?

Plot-wise, we don’t know much about the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie. With everything still up in the air – so much so that a script has  not even been written yet  – it is hard to say what the sixth installment of the series could be on. However, in a franchise as wide and successful as this one, the options are virtually endless. After all, the series goes much further than the five films as it also includes multiple video games, books, and comic books as well as the three Disneyland rides that inspired the film to begin with. Originally, the sixth film was meant to be filmed back to back with On Stranger Tides, which would suggest that it would be a continuation of that story. This is especially likely as some of the actors of the fifth film also seem to be contractually signed to return to the franchise.

Who Will Star in Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

While Keira Knightley, who played Elizabeth Swann in four films of the franchise, is satisfied with her character’s ending and does not seem interested in reprising the role, Orlando Bloom has spoken about coming back to the series as Will Turner to continue the character’s story. Whether the beloved couple comes back or not, it is safe to say that they probably will not be front and center in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie, if the previous two sequels are anything to go by. Margot Robbie is also rumored to star in the upcoming project as the protagonist but there seems to be very little confirmation on the matter, as Robbie has also talked about taking a break from acting after Barbie

When will Pirates of the Caribbean 6 come out?

In short, not very soon. With the script not even being completed – Bruckheimer has spoken about hopefully seeing a script in late 2024 – and Disney not having yet given the official  green light for it, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 will not realistically be coming out for another two to four years. Even in an optimistic scenario, the film could be ready by the second half of 2026 but, considering the big budget and high amount of special effects that this movie is likely to have, it is entirely possible to foresee a series of delays in both its production and post-production.

Will There Be Other Pirates of the Caribbean films?

There are actually two different projects in development as part of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. One is the reboot Bruckheimer spoke of and the other one is a film led by Margot Robbie; however, there is no clarity on which one may be coming first. With the latter going in the possible direction of a spin-off, the franchise seems to be opening new doors in that direction. There may be no confirmation from Disney yet, but we might be seeing an entirely new series of films within the franchise that focus on new characters and settings with the Pirates of the Caribbean universe.

One thing is for sure: Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is not coming any time soon, but we still know just enough about it to make viewers already excited at the idea of seeing our favorite  franchise on the big screen again.
