Barricades: That’s the name of the game in Silo Season 2 Episode 6. From literal barricades to mental, emotional, and metaphorical barricades, they are everywhere. But their penetrability remains to be seen. This week’s recap drops a huge plot twist, as Episode 6 hones in on the chaos erupting in Silo 18 (and believe me, it’s a lot) while Silo 17 becomes a barricade for Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson), who suddenly finds herself at the mercy of Solo (Steve Zahn).

Episode 6 opens in Silo 18 at the Raiders’ barricade site on Level 130. No one gets through, not even to deliver food or supplies. Worse is that poison is discovered on what food Mechanical does have, signaling they have a traitor amongst them. Naturally, those in the Down Deep are panicking, so much, in fact, that they rise up against Shirley (Remmie Milner) and Knox (Shane McRae) and demand they turn themselves in. As Bernard (Tim Robbins) watches this play out from the Watching Room, he relishes in the human truth that only nine missed meals separate a functioning society from the chaos, and his craved chaos is so close, he can taste it.

However, just as the situation starts to escalate, Walker (Harriet Walter) steps up and reminds Mechanical who they are, pointing out that this is exactly what Judicial wants: for Mechanical to turn on each other. Just then, a surprise delivery of food appears from the access chute with a note attached. It seems their friends on Level 122, where the farm is located, are appreciative Mechanical is keeping the lights on. It also has the name JULIETTE LEWIS on it. Ladies and gents, it looks like we have ourselves the making of a pièce de resistance!

When Bernard gets wind of the delivery, he demands all access chutes be shut down. He’s as hellbent on starving out Mechanical as he is on following the rules of “The Order”. Ironically though, it’s literally because he’s doing everything by the book that he’s single-handedly bringing down the silo and inciting a full-scale rebellion, the very thing he’s working to prevent.

Elsewhere, just before Sheriff Billings (Chinaza Uche) and Deputy Hank (Billy Postlethwaite) show up to question Walker about what happened with Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie), we see a flashback of Walker and Carla (Clare Perkins) embracing in a kiss. It’s clear she’s in agony in this emotional barricade over not knowing where Carla is or if she’s okay, so when the sheriff and his deputy arrive, she refuses to talk until she has answers on Carla’s whereabouts and safety.

Later, Billings returns with information that she was taken into custody on Level 70 but was never checked in, meaning she’s being held in seclusion. Billings says he’ll do everything to clear her name if Walker tells him what happened with Meadows, and she agrees, refusing to be barricaded behind secrets any longer.

Speaking of whereabouts and safety, let’s talk Patrick Kennedy (Rick Gomez). Remember, Sims (Common) manipulated him into starting chaos in Episode 3 by promising him a drug that would wipe out the last 22 years of his emotionally painful life. After the firebombing melee, Kennedy was presumed dead, but he really wasn’t. Last week, Billings and Hank found him hiding in the tunnels. This week, they get him to safety and bring in Dr. Nichols (Iain Glen) to remove the bullet from his chest.

Once he’s patched up, Kennedy reminds Billings of when Juliette was on the run before Bernard caught her and sent her out to clean. He says when the silo went dark, it was because Juliette and Danny (Will Merrick, of Barbie), a criminal hacker, changed the image on the silo screens. For 10 breathtaking seconds, everyone near those screens saw an outside world of color, beauty, and wildlife–a land of dreams for all intents and purposes. He then says that not long after Juliette went outside, Sims came to him about firebombing Hank’s station, and Billings starts to realize he’s been barricaded in Judicial lies from the start. He knows he must break through this mental barricade and take a stand.

Back in Bernard Land, the Mayor checks in on Lucas (Avi Nash) to see if he’s managed to decipher any of Quinn’s code. While he has not, he has figured out they’re dealing with a code within a code and after applying a new method, he’s able to find two words amongst the gibberish: SILO and ALLIE. In order to fully decipher it though, Lucas says he needs to see the legacy. Bernard knows if he wants his answers, he only has one choice: to swear Lucas in as his new Shadow. And he does.

Bernard then visits Camille (Alexandria Riley), Sims’ wife, to intimidate her with his knowledge that she helped the Mechanical fugitives escape. She assures Bernard she only stashed them to keep them safe while she notified Judicial where they were, that she knows vigilante justice is against the law.

“We all have to obey the law,” she tells him, subtly insinuating she knows what he’s up to, which is enough to stall Bernard momentarily. Before he leaves, though, he ruffles feathers and tells Camille it was her husband who encouraged the blood hunt, then presses her on what his response was when she told him of her involvement. Lies never stay barricaded for long.

Down on Level 130, a group from Mechanical shows up at the barricade in armor and with weapons. Just as Raiders call for advanced tactical equipment, a Watcher from I.T. gets a message on his screen from someone on Level 135. He alerts Sims, who is unaware but quickly learns that I.T. has been relying on Listeners for information on Mechanical since the cameras below Level 120 went out. The Watcher then tells Sims he received a warning that another group of Mechanical was going a different way, and they had a saw.

The chaos is rising, and when Sims seeks out Bernard, he comes face to face with Lucas Kyle, whom he believes to be imprisoned in the mines. This confirmation that Bernard is indeed keeping secrets from him angers Sims, and he realizes the trust he worked so hard to cultivate in Season 1 is eroding faster than a sandcastle in water. So, he turns to the one person he knows he can trust: his wife, who reminds him that it’s not his duty to stop anything from happening anymore; he’s the Judge now.

Back at the barricade, Mechanical mouths off to The Raiders as a distraction while others out of sight work on drilling through the floor to secure what appears to be some sort of winch and tow. Just as The Raiders set up a tactical formation in preparation for an ambush, the barricade comes crashing down and Mechanical rushes up full force to meet The Raiders face to face, on Level 120, which becomes the new boundary site. When Bernard finds out, he nearly blows a gasket. His plan to starve them into submission is null and void now that Mechanical has access to the farm.

Later, Shirley and Knox celebrate with a drink and a big ole kiss, which Billings interrupts when he storms in wanting to know if Knox will swear on The Pact that everything Walker just told him is true. Knox agrees. Billings then radios Bernard to say he’s located the fugitives but will not reveal their location until Bernard opens a full investigation into the death of Judge Meadows. It’s at this moment that Bernard realizes he’s just lost his sheriff, and chances are he’s likely feeling barricaded by his own lies closing in around him. Before he ends communication with Judicial, Billings asserts that he doesn’t stand with Judicial or Mechanical. He stands with the law.

Let’s stay on Billings for a sec. If you’ll remember, in Season 1, he was “diagnosed” with The Syndrome, which is an illness causing symptoms like shaking, muscle spasms, and involuntary twitching. The Syndrome is a neuralgic response to the poor environmental conditions in Silo 18, particularly in the lower levels where there is more pollution. He’s given herbs to help control his symptoms, but they don’t seem to be doing much.

In Episode 6, while having dinner with his wife, she points out he hasn’t taken his herbs in days, not since all the chaos began, then asks him to hand her a glass of water, which he does without so much as a twitch. When she points this out, it becomes clear to him that he’s likely not sick with The Syndrome at all; the herbs are making him sick, but why and under whose orders?

And then finally, we return to Silo 17, where we left Juliette passed out on the floor from a badly infected wound. Solo did indeed find her and save her life. When she awakens and regains her bearings, she asks him for her suit and helmet, to which Solo begrudgingly tells her no, she can’t have … at least not until she fixes the pump and stops the water from rising before she leaves to go home. Juliette argues that her need to get home and stop a rebellion is a bigger priority than the slowly rising water in his silo, then promises to return and fix the pump after she saves her people.

“You can waste time arguing with me, or you can figure out how to fix the pump,” he says. The choice is hers. She knows the only way out is through, and thus she enters a sort of metaphorical captivity that will define her actions and behaviors from here on out.
