Cullinan’s 1966 novel of the same name, the film takes place at a girls school in Virginia during the American Civil War and is told from the point of view of the women. It all begins when one of the students finds a wounded Union soldier (Colin Farrell) and brings him back to the school, as he’s in need of medical care. But Captain John McBurney does more than that, as he soon becomes acquainted with the school’s routine and meets its residents. Two women are particularly taken by him: disillusioned French teacher Miss Edwina (Kirsten Dunst), and rebellious teenager Miss Alicia (Elle Fanning).
There are many more residents in the school, played by an all-star cast that also includes Nicole Kidman as Miss Martha Farnsworth. Angourie Rice plays Jane, one of the students, in what is both a coming of age story and a film about women who try to make their lives worth living despite the cages in which they find themselves. Mean Girls (2024)
If Angourie Rice plays a secondary role in The Beguiled, she is the lead in Mean Girls, a film that got mixed reviews upon release but is elevated by her presence in it. The story reflects that of the 2004 original: a new student from Africa named Cady Heron (Rice) arrives at her new school and immediately catches the attention of the titular “Mean Girls”, led by “Queen Bee” Regina George (Reneé Rapp). Unlike the 2004 film, Mean Girls (2024) is also a musical, and that makes it both a faithful adaptation of the source material and a completely new film with elements of the “Mean Girls” Broadway musical that many fans adore. The Nice Guys (2016)
What if a mob enforcer who works in a very specific niche and a private investigator who knows way less than what he would have you believe joined forces to solve a completely bonkers, absurd case that may not even be a case at all? That is the premise of irresistible comedy drama The Nice Guys, one of the funniest and most original movies you’ll ever see. Said individuals are Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) and Holland March (Ryan Gosling), who meet while the former is investigating a missing girl case and the latter is looking into the possible disappearance of a porn star. The film is set in 1970s Los Angeles, and Angourie Rice plays Holland March’s snappy, wise teenage daughter.
The Nice Guys was one of the first film to show us that Ryan Gosling is great at doing comedy, and Angourie Rice is perfect as his co-star as they bounce off each other with ease, delivering hilariously memorable scenes together. The film is pretty much a masterpiece, not only for how funny it is but for the sheer genius of a screenplay that keeps on surprising you till the very end, and that is quite simply unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. The only downside to the film is that, once it’s over, you’ll be left needing more, but do not despair: according to Screen Rant, a sequel might be coming, and we are ready for it.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first MCU film about the friendly neighborhood hero, played by Tom Holland. But the movie was also Angourie Rice’s MCU debut, and though her role is very minor, she still manages to leave an impression. The film is about the titular teenage hero, who discovers that he has powers and must find a balance between his ordinary life as a student in Queens and his newfound superhero status, as he tries to fight criminals during the night.
When a new threat arrives in New York City, things get complicated for Peter, especially since his mentor, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is unresponsive and the next best thing, Stark Industries Head of Security Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), wants him to lay low. And to make matters worse, Peter has fallen for his classmate Michelle (Zendaya) and his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) has just found out about his secret identity.
In all of this, Angourie Rice plays Betty Brant, a student at Peter’s school, Midtown School of Science and Technology, who co-hosts the school’s “Midtown News” with Jorge Lendeborg Jr.’s Jason Ionello. Though her appearances in Homecoming and its sequel, Far From Home, are scarce, she still brightens the screen every time she appears, making us laugh with the unbelievable events of the day and adding authenticity to the movie.
Senior Year (2022)
Netflix comedy Senior Year starts from a compelling premise. It’s 2002, and senior cheer captain Stephanie Conway (Rice) has a promising life ahead of her. She is one of the most popular girls at school and is in the perfect relationship with boyfriend Blaine (Tyler Barnhardt). But a cheerleading stunt gone wrong sends her in a coma, and she won’t wake up until twenty years later, in 2022. Now played by Rebel Wilson, Stephanie suddenly finds herself a 37-year-old woman with no job, no popularity, and no idea of what the world looks like. While all of her friends are adults, she is still a teenager inside, whose main purpose is to get to relive the months she miss and get the Prom Queen crown she was about to earn in 2002.
Senior Year follows pretty standard beats, but it’s also a highly enjoyable film. Rebel Wilson makes our lead incredibly likeable even when she’s being completely unreasonable, and having met Angourie Rice’s younger version helps relate to her.
