Wicked: For Good is coming at the end of the year, but what can we expect from the film? Here are some reasons to be excited for Part 2!
Wicked: For Good could not come any sooner, even if it is going to be another six months before audiences get to return to the land of Oz and find out what happened to Elphaba in Part 2, after the events of Wicked. While we wait for the most anticipated sequel of the year, this is everything we can expect from the second movie of the Wicked franchise.
1. The Plot: What is Wicked: For Good Based On?
Much like its predecessor, the second Wicked film will be based on the stage musical of the same name. However, the inspiration for the movie also comes from the homonymous 1995 novel , which the musical is based on, and L Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” the original source material that inspired the entire prequel story. If the musical is anything to go by, Wicked Part 2 will start approximately five years after the events of the first movie. Now in hiding, Elphaba is now known as the Wicked Witch of the West for her opposition to the Wizard of Oz. Her former best friend Glinda, now the Good Witch of the North, has become a spokesperson for the Wizard and Madame Morrible, leaving the two on opposite sides of this fight.
2. Nessarose’s Character Arc in Wicked: For Good
While Nessarose was a likeable side character in the first Wicked film, she will definitely play a bigger – and perhaps less pleasant – part in Wicked Part 2. At the beginning of the movie , she will most likely have just become the new governor of Munchkinland. In her new position, she has taken away the very few rights the Munchkins had in order to prevent Bow from leaving her, which will then lead to Nessarose being known as The Wicked Witch of the East. However, we can definitely expect changes when it comes to Nessarose’s plotline. In an interview with Variety, Melissa Bode, who plays Nessarose in both Wicked films, revealed that there will be changes to the Wicked Witch of the East storyline in order to avoid portraying the ableism that we see in the stage production, where Nessarose’s magical enchanted shoes grant her the ability to walk.
3. Fiyero and Elphaba in Wicked Part 2
During “I’m Not That Girl” in Wicked, audiences got a glimpse of the new and blossoming romance between Fiyero and Elphaba, but we can expect to see more of it in the second part of the film. If the stage musical is anything to go by, Fiyero will be engaged to Glinda at the beginning of Wicked: For Good but will eventually let his true feelings for Elphaba prevail as he desperately tries to find her now that she is in hiding and protect her from the powerful people around them, including Madame Morrible and the Wizard of Oz.
4. Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz
As audiences would know by now, Wicked is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, but it is in Wicked: For Good that audiences will truly see how the two stories actually link. In the stage musical, Dorothy Gale appears about halfway through the second act when the tornado that took her to Oz kills Nessarose, causing Elphaba to rush to help her sister and, therefore, reveal her whereabouts to the Wizard and Madame Morrible. While the audience has been introduced to all the characters except Dorothy already, we can also expect to see more of the protagonists of the original The Wizard of Oz, as the movie will reveal who the Tin Man and the Scarecrow really are.
5. The Songs in Wicked: For Good
As a musical, Wicked Part 2 will naturally be defined by its songs. The second film will feature some beloved musical numbers, including “As Long as You’re Mine” when Elphaba and Fiyero reveal their feelings for each other and “For Good,” a moving and beautiful duet between Elphaba and Glinda towards the end of the story. However, this instalment of the Wicked franchise will also feature two new original songs, one for Elphaba and one for Glinda, both of which will perhaps reveal more about each protagonist to portray their character development in the second part of the narrative.
6. Elphaba and Glinda’s Relationship in Wicked: For Good
The first movie of the series already diverged from the musical in showing us some more details of Elphaba’s childhood, which gave the audience further insight into her character development and relationship with the talking animals. Given that the entire story has been divided into two parts, whose runtime together would account for almost double the original stage production, we can definitely expect something similar from Wicked Part 2. While there may very well be more scenes of Elphaba’s childhood, the second chapter of the saga could also show us Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship in more depth. In the stage musical, we see the two growing further apart, but their relationship still remains one of the core elements of the entire story, which is something that the second Wicked film will most likely emphasise as well.
7. Elphaba’s Biological Father Will Be Revealed in Wicked Part 2
Wicked: For Good has in store for its audience what may very well be the biggest twist of the entire musical. The musical number “No One Mourns the Wicked” in Wicked revealed that the Governor of Munchkinland wasn’t really Elphaba’s father as her mother had an extramarital affair, but at the end of the stage musical, the audience finds out that the man we had briefly seen at the beginning of the first movie is none other than the Wizard of Oz himself.
8. There Will Be More Cameos in Wicked: For Good
Fans of the musical will have noticed the cameos in Wicked which notably featured Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda respectively in the stage musical on Broadway, in the musical number “One Short Day.” Alice Fearn who played Elphaba in the West End production, also appears in the film as Glinda’s mum. Wicked: For Good seems to continue this tradition by featuring Kerry Ellis, who famously played Elphaba on stage both on Broadway and in the West End production, in an undisclosed cameo role. And, if the first part of the story is anything to go by, we can probably expect a lot more cameos to surprise us in the second chapter.
Wicked: For Good will be released globally in theaters on November 21, 2025.
