The Buccaneers was renewed for Season 2, but what can we expect from the upcoming series of the AppleTV+ show?
After the success of season 1, The Buccaneers has now been confirmed for another season: what can audiences expect from season 2? The cliffhanger ending of the first season undoubtedly left fans wanting more, as there are more plotlines and characters to be explored in the future of the show that the audience has only gotten a glimpse of so far.
Based on a book by the same title by Edith Wharton, The Buccaneers is set in 1870s London during the social season, as the arrival of five young American women prompts a clash of cultures. As The Buccaneers goes, on we follow the five protagonists in their adventures and love stories.
Nan St. George (Kristine Froseth) has to choose between Theo (Guy Remmers), the Duke of Tintagel, and his best friend Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome), while Conchita Closson (Alisha Boe) finds hardship in her marriage to Lord Richard Marable (Josh Dylan). Mabel Elmsworth (Josie Totah) enters a secret relationship with Honoria Marable (Mia Threapleton). At the same time, Nan’s sister Jinny St. George (Imogen Waterhouse) and Lizzy Elmsworth (Aubri Ibrag) both come out into society as debutants and attract the attention of Lord James Marable (Barney Fishwick). Let’s take a look at what to expect from Season 2 of The Buccaneers!
1. The identity of Nan’s mother
A lot of The Buccaneers is focused on the revelations around Nan’s mother. While much of the plot of season 1 revolves around the secret of Nan’s illegitimacy, which the character herself learns about only in the first episode, it is never revealed who her mother actually is. This is perhaps the biggest unanswered question in the whole show, reinforced by the final cliffhanger that reveals that Nam’s biological mother is in the castle. The theme of motherhood will, therefore, continue into season 2 as the biggest mystery of the next season may be around the identity of Nan’s mother rather than the circumstances surrounding her birth.
2. Guy’s future
Guy is one of the main players in the love triangle, but how will his future in season 2 pan out after Nan chooses to marry Theo? The season finale of The Buccaneers leaves Guy alone as he says goodbye to Nan and may never see her again. But, while Nan may not be running away with him as he’d hoped, Jinny is, which may suggest his possible involvement in Jinny’s plotline in the future. I would also like to see more of Guy and Lizzie, as the two seemed to have great chemistry in season 1.
3. The end of a marriage
The first season is heavily focused on weddings but season 2 of The Buccaneers might introduce some divorces. Most notably, Jinny leaves her abusive husband at the end of season 1. This leaves an uncertain future for a pregnant Jinny who has just escaped her husband with virtually nowhere to go and it will be interesting to see her character’s arc in the future, In season 2, I am also hoping to see some sort of punishment and retribution for James, who was one of the main antagonists in the first season, as the way he treated his wife might be revealed.
4. The new Duchess of Tintagel
Where a marriage ends, another one begins in the season finale as Nan chooses to marry Theo rather than run away with Guy. It is very clear that her choice has to do with protecting her family more than anything else, so I am looking forward to seeing her use this newfound power and status as a Duchess in the future. Will she be able to take on this role? We will have to wait for season 2 to find out. In the book, her marriage with Theo is also explored as well as the pressure to give birth to a boy, which could all be fascinating to see on screen in The Buccaneers.
5. Mabel and homosexuality in the 1870s
Mabel was one of the most interesting characters in the first season of The Buccaneers: her love interest in a woman, which creates an inherently more interesting discussion around marriage, love, and prejudices that the other women do not have to deal with. All of this is touched upon in season 1 but I felt like it barely scratched the surface as the show could analyse the question of homosexuality in the non-historically accurate 19th century that the show is set in,
6. Conchita’s economic struggles
The very beginning of The Buccaneers is with Conchita, as her marriage prompts the five women’s journey to England. It would only make sense, then, for her to play a significant role in season 2 as well. The season finale also leaves Conchita in a tricky situation: she has mended her relationship with her husband, but their financial troubles make their future uncertain. I would be very excited to see season 2 introduce a discussion around money and social classes as it further explores Conchita’s character and plot.
With such an open season finale and liberty over the characters’ futures, since the book remained unfinished, The Buccaneers season 2 is already exciting, as there are so many directions the show could take. More than anything else, a new season means time to explore these possible narratives and tie up all loose ends. As the audience cannot be sure of what the next season may have in store, we will just have to wait and see where the AppleTV+ show is going to take us as the audience gets ready to travel back in time to 19th century England once again.
Season 1 of Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers is now available to watch on digital and on demand. There is no release date for Season 2 of The Buccaneers yet, but it’s likely it won’t be till 2025. Read our review of Season 1 of The Buccaneers and find out what to expect from Netflix’s The Decameron!
