In episode 6 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, Percy (Walker Skobell) and Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) finally manage to arrive in Polyphemus’ (Aleks Paunovic) island where they will be reunited with Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri). In their search for the Golden Fleece, they will have to face the Cyclop himself, who is determined to defend it and keep it on his island, and an old acquaintance who has now turned into an enemy who wants it for his own ill-fated mission.
Just like the rest of season 2, episode 6 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians adds another setting for the audience to get familiar with: Polyphemus’s island. With every episode bringing in a new location, the structure of the overall season is especially successful as it never becomes repetitive or predictable, but it also lets the characters – and, therefore, the audience – encounter and explore many places over the course of their mission. This is particularly interesting in this season as the settings and characters introduced all mirror “the Odyssey” and, more specifically, Odysseus’ journey home from Troy.
With twists and turns at every corner, episode 6 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will surprise the audience with every step of the way as it lets us move deeper into Polyphemus’ island as the main characters get closer to finding the Golden Fleece. This episode is also structured really well as the audience finally gets to see all the plotlines we have followed so far intertwined and come together towards the end of season 2. The action-packed and tense sequences also create a thrilling and exciting episode that will grab the viewers’ attention from its first frame until the very last.
Unfortunately, episode 6 of the show significantly moves away from the original storyline of the books. If you are looking for a faithful adaptation of Rick Riordan’s “Sea of Monsters,” you will be disappointed. But if you’d like an action-packed, tense, and exciting adaption that only aims to loosely retell the events of the original books, Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 will be an excellent watch. While at times the changes in an adaptation might be justified, those in this episode feel somewhat out of place, as a lot of the plot of season 2 was originally more interesting and fascinating to watch in the source material than in the newest adaptation.
This is particularly disappointing as many fans had hoped for a more faithful retelling of the books through Percy Jackson and the Olympians after the widely criticised movies. This has for a long time been a key part of the appeal of the show for long-time fans of the original books, especially since the author is heavily involved in the production and writing. With episode 6 moving away so drastically from the source material, we can only expect the rest of season 2 – and of the future seasons to come – to do the same in the future.
Overall, Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 6 may be disappointing to fans of the book, but it remains a good and strong episode as far as season 2 is concerned. While not a good adaptation, the latest season of the Disney+ show is a strong, tense, and well-delivered one. Episode 6 delivers some excellent action-packed sequences that will keep the audiences at the edge of their seat as they try and guess how the show might surprise us next.
