In season 2 episode 5 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Percy (Walker Skobell) and Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) survive the monsters that took down their ship, the CSS Birmingham, in last week’s episode. The two demigods find themselves at a luxury spa and resort run by C. C. (Rosemarie Dewitt), a charming and eccentric woman whose real identity and purpose might be a lot more sinister than we could have initially imagined.

C.C. claims that her mission is to help demigods face the sirens, monsters that guard the Sea of Monsters, by working on their fatal flaw, but no one has left the resort in years. Elsewhere, Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn) makes it to Polyphemus’ (Aleks Paunovic) island, where she continues her search for the Golden Fleece with the help of an old friend.

Episode 5 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 picks up the action once again and does so incredibly well. With the main characters splitting up once again, this episode follows two parallel storylines as they all continue their quest to find the Golden Fleece and save Camp Halfblood. The cuts between the two storylines are especially successful as they always keep us wanting more from each one and  surprise us at every turn. With Clarisse’s plot, the audience can also finally see more of Polyphemus’s island and of the cyclop himself, who starts playing a very significant role in this season’s plot.

C. C.’s Spa and Resort keeps the season interesting with yet another setting that the audience is introduced to and has to become familiar with. C.C. is an especially fascinating character once we find out who she really is. While C.C. may technically be a villain in the original myth, episode 5 depicts her as a complex figure with a fascinating past and compelling motives. Instead, Rosemarie Dewitt’s layered and successful portrayal of this character made me wish we would see a lot more of C.C. in the coming episodes of season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Trailer 2 (Disney Plus)

The previous episodes of season 2 had also referenced Homer’s Odyssey, but this inspiration is even clearer in episode 5 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. In this week’s episode, the Disney+ show does an excellent job at reworking these old and well-known mix into a modern context. This is especially important as it is one of the most famous and successful elements of the original books, particularly when it comes to the “Sea of Monsters,” the second book of the series and the source material for season 2, as the latter is a retelling of the Odyssey in the Percy Jackson world.

However, episode 5 lacks a sense of urgency. This ultimately hurts the overall stakes and pacing of this episode as it can feel a little too slow at times. At the beginning of season 2, it seemed very clear that the quest for the Golden Fleece and saving Grover were both very urgent matters, but as the episodes went on, the time constraint seems to almost have been forgotten. As we are now halfway through this season, episode 5 could have benefited from a reminder that Percy, Annabeth, and Clarisse must be starting to run really short on time.

Overall, Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 5 may be the best one yet, as far as season 2 is concerned. While not perfect, it is a very successful episode thanks to its new settings that keep the story exciting, its use of traditional myths and creatures from the Odyssey, and the constant twists and turns that the audience will be surprised with.

Pros:

  • The introduction of both Circe and her island works really well.
  • The references to Homer and the reworking of the myth are especially successful in this episode.

  • This episode is lacking a sense of urgency that ultimately hurts its pace.
