Why do some people love fast-paced, tense movies while other prefer more introspective films? Why do different audiences find comfort in so many different genres, from comedy and romance to thriller, crime dramas, and even horror flicks? We all have different tastes, but astrology might play a part in all of this too.

If you’re someone who pays attention to zodiac signs, then you might find it a useful tool for self-awareness and personal growth. Astrology can help you better understand your character, energy, and temperament, and open up new possibilities for you. It can also help you on your spiritual journey, with the help of online spiritual platforms. Nebula, for example, focuses on personal discovery and does a lot more than horoscopes: just read some Nebula reviews!

But films can also help you connect with your inner self, and our zodiac signs can direct us to certain movies that we might enjoy. Take a look at our astro-film pairings below, with a list of 12 movies to watch based on your zodiac sign! Enjoy!

1. Mad Max: Fury Road

Aries (The Adventurer)

A scene with a car and the desert in Mad Max: Fury Road
Mad Max: Fury Road (Warner Bros. Pictures)

Aries loves anything that keeps the pulse racing. You’re bold, energetic, and rarely patient with slow plots, which makes Max Max: Fury Road the perfect movie for you. This sequel to George Miller’s post-apocalyptic saga, which began with with Mad Max (1979), is not only so much better than the original trilogy, but it’s also considered by many one of the best action movies of all time. Not only that, but you don’t really need to know much about the other films in order to understand and enjoy this one.

All you need to know is that Fury Road takes place in a future where the Earth’s resources are mostly gone, after the apocalypse wiped out the entire civilization. We follow Max (Tom Hardy) and war captain Furiosa (Charlize Theron), whose chance meeting at the beginning of the movie leads to them teaming up against tyrant Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), who is holding most survivors captive in his fortress, the Citadel.

As an Aries, you’ll love the breathtaking action that made Max Max: Fury Road such a beloved classic, and you’ll also find a gripping story that’s part of a wider universe. If you liked the movie, we’d recommend 2023 prequel Furiosa next, but you’ll also love superhero blockbusters, epic adventures, survival thrillers, and movies with fierce energy that match your fire.

2. Chocolat

Taurus (The Sensualist)

Chocolat Film Trailer (Rotten Tomatoes Classics)

Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp are the leads of this 2001 gem from director Lasse Hallström, based on Joanne Harris’s 1999 bestselling novel. Chocolat begins in the late 1950s, when chocolatier Vianne (Binoche) arrives in a quiet French town with her six-year-old daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). The community isn’t used to change, but that’s exactly what Vianne brings, when she opens a chocolate shop in the middle of the town square. Soon, her uncanny ability to understand her customers beyond their culinary tastes makes her the talk of the town. Residents forget about Lent and give in to temptation, which earns Vianne some enemies, but also some allies, such as mysterious “travellers” leader Roux (Depp).

Beauty, comfort, and indulgence are your playground, Taurus, and Chocolat is the definition of a comfort film, combining gorgeous visuals, mouthwatering food, and a beautiful love story. For other recommendations, look for slow romances and stunning, atmospheric films.

3. Memento

Gemini (The Storyteller)

If you’re a Gemini, you need quick-witted banter, unexpected plot twists, and a little chaos to stay interested. Christopher Nolan’s Memento will have your brain racing as you follow a man who suffers from short-term memory loss, but who’s still determined to track down the man who brutally murdered his wife. To do so, he developed an intriguing solution: since his memories reset within mere minutes, Leonard (Guy Pearce) has tattooed clues and instructions for future versions of himself on his own skin. This makes Memento a puzzle, on top an already compelling narrative: it’s no surprise this psychological thriller won 57 awards upon release.

Expect multiple narratives, a complex but satisfying plot, and a fantastic performance from Guy Pearce. If you need further recommendations, check out movies that blend multiple genres and offer mysteries to solve. Those are the films whose characters will surprise you, and that will stick with you for a long time.

4. Perfect Days

Cancer (The Nurturer)

Perfect Days (Neon)

This recent release from acclaimed director Wim Wenders is the perfect watch if your sign is Cancer. Home-loving and emotional, you’re happiest with heartfelt stories, such as family dramas, nostalgic classics, and films that tug at the heartstrings are your comfort zone. Revolving around a middle-aged Japanese man who cleans public toilets in Tokyo for a living, Perfect Days will wrap a cozy blanket around you that will stay on for several days after your first watch: we guarantee you won’t be able to stop thinking about it.

The plot itself is straightforward: the protagonist, Hirayama (Kōji Yakusho, in a performance that earned him the Best Actor Award at Cannes), is content with leading a simple life and focusing on little pleasures, like reading a book, listening to music, or eating a sandwich on a bench while looking at nature. But as we follow him around, we slowly come to understand that something is hidden behind this façade, and it’s the very essence of life itself. As a Cancer, movies about belonging really speak to you, and this profound meditation on life is sure to have an impact on you.

5. Moulin Rouge!

Leo (The Star)

If you’re a Leo, you love drama, spectacle, and grandiosity, which makes musicals one of your go-to genres. The choice is vast, here: from all-time classics like Grease and Dirty Dancing to the recently released La La Land, Wicked, and many more, so many musicals keep being released, and there’s something for every taste.

We picked Moulin Rouge!, from director Baz Luhrmann, because it encompasses everything we love about the genre: a sweeping love story, a thought-provoking plot, grandiose, stunning musical numbers and choreographies, epic songs you’ll recognize, and fantastic acting from leads Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Prepare to have a “Spectacular Spectacular” time (trust us, you’ll get that reference), and don’t forget to also check out Luhrmann’s more recent musical, Elvis.

6. Arrival

Virgo (The Analyst)

Amy Adams in Arrival

If you’re a Virgo, you’re a serious and analytical individual, so you need something that will challenge your mind. We can’t think of a better film to do that than Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, a sci-fi gem that also happens to be one of the best movies ever made – at least, according to us.

The film starts when a series of gigantic objects materialize in 12 seemingly random locations around the world. Is it an alien invasion, or is it something else? Since the objects – which may be spaceships of sorts – are just staying there and not doing anything, the world is confused. One day, linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is recruited to lead a team of experts charged with investigating this phenomenon. Soon, she discovers that aliens are involved, and that, together with scientist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) they need to find a way to communicate with them before the leaders of the world decide to start a war.

If that, alone, sounds like a compelling premise, wait till you see what Arrival has in store for you. This is a timely, thought-provoking film that leaves its very best for last, with a philosophical twist that will make you rethink everything you’ve seen till then. Not to be missed!

7. Little Women

Libra (The Romantic)

You’re Venus-ruled, and you love beauty, balance, and romance. Libras love gorgeous films with great camerawork and romantic themes, which makes costume dramas the way to go. But what if you’ve already seen all possible Jane Austen adaptations that have ever been made? Then it’s time to check out Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, aka the brave and independent Jo (Saoirse Ronan), the conflicted Amy (Florence Pugh), the kind Beth (Eliza Scanlen), and the clever Meg (Emma Watson). During the film, we watch the four March sisters grow into their own selves, which includes not only a love square, but also some interesting dynamics that have to do with societal expectations of women.

But since this is a Greta Gerwig film, you have so much more to look forward to, on top of this timeless story. Gerwig plays with timelines in a very clever way in this movie, which will haunt you with its themes and imagery, and is bound to become one of your all-time favorites.

8. Gone Girl

Scorpio (The Visionary)

Depth is your lexicon. You have a taste for thrillers, psychological thrillers, and supernatural mysteries with intrigue. And you’re in luck, because these are very popular subgenres, and the choice is wide for you, Scorpio! With so many movies out there, though, we’d still recommend this 2014 masterpiece from director David Fincher.

Adapted from Gillian Flynn’s 2012 novel of the same name, Gone Girl begins with the disappearance of a woman named Amy (Rosamund Pike). Up till then, Amy and her husband, writer Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck), were having the time of their lives, and everyone in their town of Carthage, Mo. referred to them as the perfect couple. But are things really as they seem? Soon, Amy’s husband becomes the main suspect in the investigation, and he’ll have to prove his innocence. But this is not all that’s been going on in a thriller that subverts your expectations till the very last scene. Prepare to be mesmerized by one of David Fincher’s best films!

9. Wild (2014)

Sagittarius (The Explorer)

Wild Movie Trailer (Searchlight Pictures)

You’re a Sagittarius: you need adventure, humor, and insight. Think road-trip epics, great quests, or movies about discovery, which will light up your imagination. Of course, you might have already heard about the films that usually come to mind in this subgenre, from classics like Into the Wild to indie darlings like Little Miss Sunshine and even sci-fi epics like Star Wars. So we thought we’d pick something a little different.

Reese Witherspoon shines as the lead of Jean-Marc Vallée’s (Dallas Buyers Club) Wild, adapted from a real-life adventure which author Cheryl Strayed recounted in her 2012 bestselling memoir of the same name. Vallée and screenwriter Nick Hornby manage to capture the magic of the book in a movie that will surprise you right till the end. It all starts when a heroin addict, whose marriage has just fallen apart, decides to put her life back together. With no experience whatsoever, she decides to go on a hike all on her own, which will see her walking over a thousand miles on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Wild is a film about healing, but the journey to get there is what makes it so enthralling and even gripping. The film owes a lot of its success to Reese Witherspoon, who is exceptional here, but the unbelievable adventure at its core is one you’ll remember for a long time.

10. The Social Network

Capricorn (The Builder)

Ambitious and disciplined, you enjoy films about hard work, success, or history. You’re inspired by leaders, builders, and individuals who defy the odds, which makes The Social Network – the second David Fincher film in our list! – the perfect pick. This 2010 movie tells the true story of how Facebook came to be, but it does so with a truly inventive narrative structure that shifts between different timelines.

In the main timeline, we watch future Facebook creators Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) and Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), roommates at Harvard, create the social network out of sheer luck, as Zuckerberg originally devised it as a way to get back at an ex. We follow the two friends/business partners and the people with whom they’ll end up collaborating – including Napster creator Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) as they rise to success, which is exciting and satisfying to witness. But there’s a second timeline that takes place in the present, where Mark is dealing with multiple law suits, including one from Saverin. The Social Network will have your eyes glued to the screen.

11. BlackKklansman

Aquarius (The Inventor)

BlackKklansman (Focus Features)

You’re progressive, inventive, and humanitarian. Sci-fi epics, social-issue films, or avant-garde films appeal to you. If it challenges society or provokes new thinking, you’ll love it. Many films can fit this description, as it spans several genres, but we chose BlackKklansman, a 2018 investigative drama that, like many Spike Lee films, tackles very real issues with humor and heart, and keeps on surprising you till the end.

Not only that, but the film tells the true story of an African American Colorado Springs police officer who managed to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan with the help of his Jewish colleague. If that sounds unbelievable, it’s because it is, and this makes BlackKklansman even more of a must-watch. At its center are fantastic performances from John David Washington and Adam Driver as our protagonist, in a film that explores systemic hate to condemn hypocrisy and racism – but that also manages to remain gripping and even entertaining throughout.

12. The Shape of Water

Pisces (The Dreamer)

The Shape of Water: Trailer (Fox Searchlight)

Pisces floats on fantasy, compassion, and feeling. Fantasy, magical realism, and moving dramas are ideal for you, which makes The Shape of Water a fantastic recommendation. One of Guillermo del Toro’s most beloved gems, the film takes place in Cold War-era U.S in the 1960s. A government lab employee names Elisa (a phenomenal Sally Hawkins) leads a lonely life, improved only by occasional interactions with her colleague Zelda (Octavia Spencer) and next door neighbor Giles (Richard Jenkins).

One day, her life is changed forever when she stumbles upon a classified experiment that the company is running in secret. Soon, she comes face to face with a creature that’s just as much of an outcast as she is, and the film takes a completely unexpected, moving direction. Not to be missed!

The 12 movies listed in our astro-film pairings are suggestions of movies you might want to watch if you’re looking to be inspired by your zodiac signs. They are all fantastic films, and we’d recommend checking out the other titles in the list as you might find other movies that grab your interest. Happy watching!
