THREE MEN IN A BOAT: THE PLOT OF THE MOVIE
Based on Jerome K. Jerome’s 1889 comic novel of the same name, Three Men in a Boat comes from director Ken Annakin (Monte Carlo or Bust, Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines). Laurence Harvey (Women of Twilight), David Tomlinson (Mary Poppins) and Jimmy Edwards (The Bed Sitting Room) play three Edwardian men-about-town looking to escape. To do so, they take a boating holiday on the Thames – becoming the titular “three men in a boat”. Needless to say, chaos ensues.
It all goes well, at first, for Harris (Edwards), J (Tomlinson), and George (Harvey), who each took the holiday for a different reason. George has a desk job at a bank that he’s eager to leave behind, while Harris needs some time away from Mrs. Willis (Martita Hunt), who’s insisting he marries her daughter Clara (Adrienne Corri). And then there’s ‘J,’ who just needs a little break from his wife Ethelbertha (Noelle Middleton).
But our trio is made of clumsy individuals, and they soon find themselves entangled in complications, from the Hampton Court maze and the Henley Regatta to various hilarious accidents. At some point, they meet three girls who are also headed their way: Sophie (Shirley Eaton) and sisters Bluebell (Jill Ireland) and Primrose (Lisa Gastoni). But just when they feel like their luck is changing, Mrs. Willis, her daughter and Ethelbertha show up.
