Dexter: Resurrection Episode 8 is chock-full of close calls for the titular character and his Dark Passenger—even for Angel (David Zayas) in his continued effort to prove that Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is the real Bay Harbor Butcher.

Last week’s episode of Dexter: Resurrection showcased the Zen and the art of messing with Dexter Morgan in one of the Dark Passenger’s most glorious takedowns to date. As we roll straight into this week’s episode, Dexter is still on his high from correcting the course of his that was headed for disaster, but it’s a short-lived high.

In Dexter: Resurrection Episode 8, “The Kill Room Where It Happens”, Dexter is knocked off his game in rushing to take down the last of Prater’s Predators (as I like to call them), Rapunzel/Al (Eric Stonestreet). Additionally, Harrison (Jack Alcott) settles more into a normal life when he applies to community college and goes out on a date, Angel lands in hot water after a close call with the Dark Passenger, and Prater (Peter Dinklage) catches Dexter in a precarious position.

From start to finish, Episode 8 will have you gritting your teeth while holding your breath, and by the last scene, Dexter isn’t the only one whose heart stops beating and body starts trembling. Read on for a full recap and review of these close calls in Dexter: Resurrection Episode 8!

The one that got away

The only one of Prater’s Predators who is still alive is Al, also known as Rapunzel because of his fetish for ponytails, but Dexter and his Dark Passenger plan to remedy that in episode 8. Dexter scopes out a kill space and winds up finding a wig shop that’ll be perfect, since the owners are out of town and the place is closed.

It serves as one of the creepiest of Dexter’s kill rooms, that’s for sure. Peering through the opaque plastic covering the walls are the eyes, lips, and ponytails of wigged mannequins—such a creepy setting. For Al, though, it’s perfect, and the Dark Passenger can’t wait to have Rapunzel on his table.

There’s a problem, though: After everything that happened with the Gemini Killer, and with Lowell’s disappearance and Mia’s “suicide”, Al is spooked. Prater’s parties no longer hold the luster for him that they used to, so he’s packing up to head home and play family man.

Dexter hurriedly makes plans to meet with him before he leaves town, and though the two settle on a time and place, Al does not show, thus becoming the one that got away. Preferring to keep his Prater life and private life separate, when Dexter calls him, Al refuses to give any information on where he can be found, instead offering a “see ya next year” before throwing his phone out the window.

So, Rapunzel won’t be on his table tonight, but someone will.

The Dark Passenger finds a new target

After hearing about Harrison’s run-in with Elsa’s (Emilia Suárez) landlord, Vinny (Steve Shirripa, of Blue Bloods), Dexter does some investigating and finds that he just might fit the code after all. With a record of being a slumlord who puts tenants out on the street and refuses to fix tenant requests, which has resulted in some deaths, how could he not? Harry (James Remar) steps in to warn Dexter he’s reaching to make Vinny fit the code, but after meeting Vinny in person, the Dark Passenger’s fury switch is flipped, and it’s on.

Later that night, Dexter snatches Vinny on his way home from work. Dexter and his Dark Passenger are practically salivating over wanting to kill him, but this table party is different. This table party is just a warning, an attempt to scare a scumbag into changing his harmful ways.

As Vinny wakes, Dexter cuts off his air supply and shows him what it feels like to be unable to breathe, demanding that he do right by his tenants, or else. Desperate, Vinny agrees and pleads for his life as Dexter raises his knife just as the door to the wig shop opens.

Angel lands in hot water after a close call with the Dark Passenger

Since leaving his Airpods in Dexter’s car door, Angel has been busy tracking the suspected Butcher’s movements—enough to establish his routine and be able to identify any anomalies. When he notices Dexter in a part of town he never visits, and he heads out to see where and why.

After noticing a light on in the wig shop that’s supposed to be closed, he picks the lock, certain Dexter is inside with a victim. As he opens the door, a frightened, barely clothed Vinny comes running out from behind a sheet of plastic screaming, “He’s going to kill me!”

Angel rushes to the back, through the plastic, and is bewildered by what he sees. The Bay Harbor Butcher isn’t there, and neither is any blood or victim, but this elaborate kill room leaves him speechless. He always wondered how the Butcher got away with these crimes and never left a shred of evidence behind, and now he knows.

He calls Detectives Wallace (Kadia Saraf) and Oliva (Dominic Fumusa), who arrive at the scene, confused as to why they’re there. There’s no victim, no evidence of any crime, and Dexter was not seen. All Angel knows is that moments after Vinny ran out of the wig store, he tracked Dexter’s car leaving the wig store. However, Dexter found the Airpods after speeding away and destroyed them, so when Angel tries to prove he’s been tracking Dexter’s movements, there’s nothing to show the police.

The more Angel talks and tries to convince them it was Dexter, the more they start to suspect that something is off with his story. Did Angel do all this himself? They wonder. Wallace takes it a step further and calls Quinn (xx) down in Miami, who informs her Angel is no longer active law enforcement, and he has no idea why he’s in New York. “The Bay Harbor Butcher case is closed,” he tells her. Now, Angel really looks suspicious, and if not that, crazy.

This was a very close call for Dexter and his Passenger … too close. It can’t happen again.

Prater catches Dexter in a precarious position

As Prater supervises the finishing touches on his big gala for wounded police officers, Charley (Uma Thurman) expresses her distrust of Red/Dexter. He’s too private, too secretive, and too elusive. She doesn’t like that. Prater points out that Gareth was always off, not Red, then defends him. Prater likes Red. Besides, Charley is there to do one thing, and that’s not to express her opinion. It’s to protect Prater at all costs. So, she does.

The day after Dexter and his Passenger’s close call with Angel, Dexter is having lunch with Harrison at a restaurant when suddenly, he freezes, all color fades from his face (along with his smile), and he visibly starts trembling. When the camera pans to show us why, it’s a breath-holding moment as we see Prater approaching the table.

“Red,” he says politely, “you didn’t tell me you had a son.” End scene. Holy, Sh*t.

Dexter: Resurrection Episode 8 Review

Well, we’re certainly building up to the penultimate episode, and, given the amount of shocks, twists, and close calls so far, who knows what’s coming next. What do I think? I’m so glad you asked.

I think Dexter and Harrison will unite to take down Prater and Charley. Maybe I’m wrong, but what if I’m right? Think about how exhilarating that will be to see—and, if they’re successful, where do they go from there?

An entire world full of scumbags and killers awaits them, so the world is literally their oyster, as long as they don’t get caught.

As for episode 8, though, how will Red/Dexter handle Prater? What will he say? Will he be convincing enough? Will Harrison be convincing enough? I think Dexter put all his eggs in one basket where Prater was concerned and labeled him not as a threat but as a caution.

Clearly, in this moment where Prater busts in on Dexter’s personal life shows he’s not a warning; he’s a threat—the biggest one. He’s a billionaire voyeur who collects serial killers and their trophies. While he’s denied killing or even being able to, we don’t have that proof. Who’s to say that Prater isn’t the most dangerous killer of them all, and if he isn’t, something tells me we can assume that Charley is.

Stay tuned, kids. There’s only one more episode until the finale!
