Episode 6 of Dexter: Resurrection, “Cats & Mouse”, is full of some thrilling edge-of-your seat moments, right up to the point where it smacks you in the face with a big ole plot twist that we all should’ve seen coming but didn’t. By episode’s end, you’ll be left with one word in mind, and it’ll pop into your head long before Dexter ever says it out loud.
In this week’s recap and review, Dexter and Harrison’s (Jack Alcott) bond deepens while a suspicious Prater (Peter Dinklage) puts his remaining guests at ease about their safety. Additionally, Harrison’s Dark Passenger resurfaces, Captain Batista (David Zayas) has a theory about who really murdered Ryan Foster (Bryan Lillis), and Dexter’s Dark Passenger strikes again but makes a monumental mistake that leads to a shocking plot twist.
Let’s get rolling.
Dexter and Harrison deepen their father-son bond
Episode 6 opens with Dexter sweeping his porch, narrating how peaceful it is to sweep away the dirt and grime, and we know he isn’t just being literal. The moment is drenched in melancholy, though, as Blessing (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine) appears with news that his mother has died. With a wake to attend and nothing but a black hoodie to wear, Harrison brings over some proper attire for his dad and decides to accompany him.
It’s a sweet moment between father and son. Harrison recalls how hard funerals are when you’re alone, referring to when he lost Hannah, his stepmother from the original series. He admits he’s glad Dexter is back, that losing him a second time was rough. This moment opens the door even further for their bond to deepen.
As Dexter teaches his son how to tie a tie the way Harry (James Remar) taught him, we get a creatively shot image of the two in a mirror. It’s an important mirroring moment that shows how the two are, for all intents and purposes, in a place where they’re no longer father and son. They see each other as human beings, as two people teaching and nurturing one other through darkness.
A suspicious Prater gathers the group
With The Tattoo Collector/Lowell (Neil Patrick Harris) M.I.A. and Lady Vengeance/Mia arrested, Prater is suspicious and rounds up his guests. He’s feeling the heat—not of something going on within his secret group but of the jeopardy his connection to his beloved serial killers is in.
When Dexter (as Red) arrives at Prater’s manor, Rapunzel/Al (Eric Stonestreet) and The Gemini Killer/Gareth (David Dastmalchian) are already there, theorizing over where Lowell could be and what to do about Mia’s arrest.
Prater is certain she won’t talk, but Gareth isn’t. He thinks they should kill her. The more he talks, the more he reveals his misogynistic, narcissistic, egoist personality. He brags about how he’s ranked highest on the FBI’s Most Wanted list because of his number of kills, which always occur in pairs. This catches Dexter’s attention, and he locks onto Gareth as his Dark Passenger’s next target.
Harrison’s Dark Passenger resurfaces
While babysitting Elsa’s (Emilia Suárez) son, who is suffering from asthma due to a black mold issue that her landlord is ignoring, the landlord shows up demanding rent money.
Harrison tells him she won’t pay until he fixes the mold issue. The landlord says he doesn’t fix issues for non-paying tenants who are no-good moms. It’s clear this guy is a jackass, and the more he talks about Elsa, Harrison’s Dark Passenger awakens and rises to a bubbling surface. In a moment that’ll have you leaning over the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens, Harrison jams a fork right into the landlord’s eye.
Luckily, it’s just a vision but still, Harrison panics and goes to his father. Dexter stops him from spiraling by pointing out that he had an impulse, which is human, but the important thing is that he denied the impulse and chose not to act on it because of his need to do the right thing.
“You’re like your Aunt Deb,” Dexter tells him, encouraging him to take his “Morgan sense of justice and use it to make things better and find your own path. I’ll be here to help. Second chances are for taking.”
Harrison’s moment is similar to Dexter’s moment of self-evolvement in the Dexter: Resurrection Season Premiere. How poetic.
Lady Vengeance thwarts Captain Batista’s efforts
As Detectives Wallace and Oliva work to connect Ryan murder to Lady Vengeance, they start figuring out things don’t add up. Just then, Captain Batista shows up with a theory: He doesn’t think Mia killed Ryan.
He tells them how Ryan’s death reminded him of the Bay Harbor Butcher cases down in Miami, and how, even though Sgt. Doakes (Erik King) of Miami P.D. was fingered as the Butcher, Batista believes his former colleague Dexter Morgan was the butcher … but he was in a coma when Ryan was killed, so Dexter didn’t do it. It was his son, Harrison.
Batista believes Dexter taught Harrison his methods, then planted the watch to protect his son. If he can just show Mia a picture of Dexter, he’ll know whether he’s right by the way she reacts to the photo.
It’s an edge-of-your-seat moment when, just as Batista, Wallace, and Oliva arrive at the prison to question Mia, alarms go off. It seems Lady Vengeance is no more: Mia hung herself in her cell and died by suicide, thwarting Batista’s efforts to solve his Bay Harbor Butcher case theory once and for all.
Dexter’s Dark Passenger takes down another killer
After Prater’s gathering, Dexter follows Gareth, but in a turn of events, we all know Gareth is also watching Dexter, and that’s proven when he’s waiting inside when Dexter returns home. Dexter plays it smart, though, and feeds his ego when asked why he was following him. He tells Gareth he was starstruck and wanted to be closer to him, and it works.
He then asks Gareth why he kills in pairs.
“They’re the ultimate bond,” he answers. “They never love each other more than in that moment,” referring to the moment when they know they’re about to die.
Dexter’s Dark Passenger makes his move and spikes Gareth’s drink with M99 then wastes no time in killing him. Dexter’s darkness is almost exposed when Blessing shows up to talk. It’s a moment full of close calls as Dexter hides the body quickly in the one place every guest asks to use: the bathroom.
Dexter’s mistake leads to a huge plot twist
Dexter is always thorough in what he does, even in research. However, due to the urgency to satiate his urge, he failed to look deeply into Gareth’s background, or to fully think through the meaning of The Gemini Killer.
After a phone call from Charley, Dexter/Red shows up for a surprise helicopter ride with Prater. That’s not all who’s there, though—so are Charley and Al. As they buckle up, before they take off, another car arrives, and that’s the moment this big plot twist smacks you square in the face. In another edge-of-your-seat moment, guess who emerges?
THE GEMINI KILLER.
This guy’s moniker isn’t astrological in nature or an homage to the Zodiac killer or even how he chooses his victims—no. It’s a name chosen because Gareth is a literal twin. It’s not The Gemini Killer; it’s The Gemini Killers.
Yep: SHIT.
Dexter: Resurrection Episode 6 Review
Episode 6 really does a great job of distracting viewers from the reality that The Gemini Killer is actually one of a twin. This is very well done. We were so engaged in Gareth’s ego, arrogance, and pride, as well as in Dexter’s urge to sweep this dirt and grime off the planet, that we never stopped to think about the murderous moniker’s connotation. It’s a genius moment that makes for one hell of a shocking plot twist.
How will Dexter/Red handle this now? Will the twin sniff out something happened to his brother? Also, does Prater even know Gareth is a twin?
