This week’s episode of Dexter: Resurrection tickled my fancy to the max and had me thinking about one piece of literature the whole time: “The Tell-Tale Heart” by my favorite author, Edgar Allen Poe. Episode 4 is so artistically guided by paranoia and curiosity, it’s delicious to watch.

As Harrison (Jack Alcott) finds himself locked in a state of paranoia after picking up the watch that belonged to his victim and being haunted by its incessant ticking, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) attends the mysterious dinner party. Not only do we meet the man behind the invitation, but our curiosity is satiated when we also meet the other serial killers–one of whom inspires Dexter’s Dark Passenger to strike again.

Keep reading for a full recap and review of Dexter: Resurrection Episode 4, “Call Me Red”.

Let’s dine with some serial killers, shall we?

Dexter: Resurrection Episode 4 opens with Dexter prepping to attend the mysterious dinner party, which he refers to as an all-you-can-eat buffet for his Dark Passenger. While he’s bursting with excitement and curiosity, Harry reveals his paranoia.

He worries they might not believe Dexter is Red (Marc Menchaca), then reminds him of the only publicly known serial killer meetup. A man known as The Pig Farmer used to have other killers out to his farm in the Pacific Northwest for a grotesque orgy of sex and carnage. Harry worries this could be a trap Dexter is walking into, but Dexter assures him, he’s prepared.

At an extremely secure, lavish manor, Dexter meets his gracious host, Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage). Prater is thrilled to meet Red. Publicly, he’s a venture capitalist; privately, he’s a huge fan of serial killers—a voyeur vampire who wants all the dirty details. Since he doesn’t “have the skill set or imagination to do what you do,” he instead hosts private gatherings to offer like-minded individuals a safe space.

Dexter finds himself besotted with curiosity when Prater shows off his own trophy room full of souvenirs of some of the most prolific serial killers in American history. Displayed are items like William Gacy’s clown suit and Ed Gein’s spinal cord lamp—even the Trinity Killer’s hammer. Seeing this freezes Dexter in memories before he notices a familiar box. Sure enough, sitting right there are his own trophies—the blood slides.

But that’s not all. Across the room is the very table on which Dexter killed his brother, The Ice Truck Killer. This locks him in a hell full of memories before the arrival of other guests pulls him back to reality.

Episode 4 introduces us to Mia (Krysten Ritter), who’s also known as Lady Vengeance. She’s a world-class sommelier who, by night, takes out sexual predators. Next, we meet Al (Eric Stonestreet). He’s quite the family man with a wife and a gaggle of kids. He’s also known as the serial killer Rapunzel, who cuts off his victims’ ponytails.

When Lowell (Neil Patrick Harris) shows up, we can tell right away he’s a bit of a sleaze. His ego is rather inflated, and he’s known as the Tattoo Collector, which, enough said. Finally, there’s Gareth (David Dastmalchian), the Gemini Killer. We don’t learn much about him, but rest assured, we will. He is creepy.

At dinner, Prater lays out the rules, which are meant to protect them: Never turn on the group. If you do, your invite is rescinded, you’re arrested, or you die. During show-and-tell, Lowell reveals his next target and when he plans to kill her, making himself Dexter’s next target.

As Dexter and his Dark Passenger revel in the buffet of butchers before him, Harry reminds him not to play with his food.

Dexter’s Dark Passenger strikes again

Dexter makes plans to meet with Lowell, who picks the bar right across the street from the place his next victim is wrapping up her last tattoo session. The hunger in his eyes as he watches her yields desperation, and it is palpable. This moment is a great shot, because, as we see the hunger in his eyes as he ogles his next victim, we also see the burning desire in Dexter’s as he watches Lowell watching her.

Dexter has no time to go home and get his tools; so, he must improvise. He follows Lowell as Lowell follows his vic, and when Lowell goes to gas her, Dexter sneaks up from behind and redirects the mask onto Lowell’s face, knocking him out. When he awakens, he’s wrapped to a tattoo table—the shop had a lot of what Dexter needed, and Lowell’s kit carried the weapons. So, here we go.

Lowell knows his death is inevitable, but he taunts who he thinks is Red for breaking Prater’s rules after just one day. Herein lies another fantastic moment of episode 4, as two important revelations happen: Dexter tells Lowell he’s not Ronald Schmidt, or Red, and admits he’s really the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Upon hearing this, Lowell goes to scream but the Butcher buries his knife deep in Lowell’s chest. Dexter’s Dark Passenger strikes again, ridding New York City of a second serial killer.

Harrison faces his tell-tale truth

Poor Harrison. I’m pretty sure his little tell-tale heart went from beating normally to not beating at all, on to trying to beat its way right out of his chest as paranoia infiltrated his mind.

In the Dexter: Resurrection season premiere, hotel guest (and Harrison’s murder victim) Ryan Foster (Bryan Lillis) had given Harrison his watch to get fixed. In episode 4, the watch is ready, and if Harrison doesn’t pick it up, it’ll likely find a home with the cops. After getting the watch, Harrison can’t stop hearing its incessant ticking, which grows louder and more robust in sound with each effort he takes to mute it and get away from it.

As his paranoia grows, so, too, does his guilt. It’s about this time that Det. Angel Batista (David Zayas) shows up, and Harrison’s tell-tale heart skips a fat beat. Angel realizes Harrison doesn’t know his father is alive, and instead of enlightening him, instead uses the opportunity to see if Harrison knows anything about his dad having been the Bay Harbor Butcher.

The next time they meet, Angel is armed with information about the hotel murder after talking with Det. Wallace (Kadia Saraf). He interrogates Harrison, who controls his paranoia as Angel lays out similarities to the Bay Harbor Butcher’s tactics, insinuating that if Harrison isn’t the killer, he’s hiding something about his father.

As Harrison walks away, the ticking of Ryan’s watch emerges first in his head, then from his pocket. As the ticking increases, flashbacks flood in, and his sweet, little tell-tale heart pounds so hard, his guilt pushes him to act.

He walks to the police station, ready to talk to Det. Wallace, but before going in, someone stops him. He turns around to find his father staring him in the face. Harrison—in total disbelief at what he’s seeing—freezes with curiosity, wondering how on earth Dexter is still alive.

Dexter: Resurrection Episode 4 Review

Episode 4 is my favorite so far, full of notable wryly funny moments. Prater’s dinner, at least for Dexter, functions as a joke on the other killers. They don’t realize they’re all sitting ducks for the Bay Harbor Butcher. Really, though, the joke is on Dexter. As he eyes a rack of lamb, Prater puts a plate of grass in front of him. Turns out Red is a vegan. No blood for the Dark Passenger tonight!

Dexter also pretends to Charley (Uma Thurman) that she’s a badass when she mentions it only took her three weeks to find out Red’s identity. He tells us, “It only took me three days.” It’s moments like this that keep us so connected to his character.

Now, Lowell’s death. While all of Dexter’s Dark Passenger’s kills have had the risk of getting him into trouble, this kill could be worse. If Prater finds out, first, who Dexter really is and, second, that he killed Lowell, will it pique his curiosity or upset his required balance? Will he deliver to Dexter the same fate that The Canton Clubber met in episode 2 (death by a bat full of nails)?

The pressure is on! With Angel sniffing around, and Prater’s rules broken, both Dexter and Harrison find themselves under the gun. Stay tuned, fellow enthusiasts!

Episode 4 of Dexter: Resurrection is currently streaming on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME. New episodes will be released weekly on Fridays through September 12, 2025.
